I love how sailors used to speak in flags. A single letter raised to the wind, meaning follow me, or altering my course, or simply no. A whole vocabulary made of color and shape, read from a distance, across water.

I’m opening a run of commissioned signal flags: a letter of your choosing, made by hand in punch needle and couching embroidery, a primary color against white. Think of it as a mantra, something to carry a season, a memory.

Relief Map Blue No. 3. 60x40” Wool and acrylic yarn on monks cloth. This piece is made with two techniques: traditional rug making punch needle, and couching embroidery. This is the largest piece I’ve done yet and I hope you get to stand in front of it one day and get lost in the stitches. #fiberart by @peter_ciao

Some landscapes are not places you can find on a map—they are built from memory, resilience, and the stories we inherit.

RELIEF MAPS
by Peter Chao

transforms fiber into topography, using punch needle and couching techniques to create richly textured landscapes that explore migration, identity, and belonging. Inspired by his father’s journey from China to Taiwan during the 1949 Great Exodus, these works imagine a new terrain—a place shaped by remembrance, loss, and the enduring search for home. You raise it stitch by stitch, making somewhere to stand.

Join us for this moving exhibition that invites viewers to reflect on the landscapes we carry within us.

Grateful for everyone who came out to the opening of “Traces & Testimonies” at @ceresgallerynyc last week. It was moving to see my work in conversation with other textile artists and to connect with so many of you about the ways we carry memory through our creative practices.

White Waves No. 15 continues to feel like an important marker in my exploration of these two fishing towns that shaped me. Thank you to juror Marjorie Nathanson and @textilestudygroupofnewyork for creating this beautiful opportunity, and to @ceresgallerynyc for hosting us.

Excited to share that my work White Waves No. 15 will be part of Traces & Testimonies, a juried exhibition with the Textile Study Group of New York at Ceres Gallery.

This piece explores water and memory—stitched connections between the fishing towns that have shaped me. Honored to be showing alongside such thoughtful artists, and grateful to juror Marjorie Nathanson for selecting the work.

Opening reception Thursday, January 8 at 6pm. Exhibition runs January 6-31, 2026.
