POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

FORGING NEW TERRAIN. STITCH BY STITCH.

Some landscapes are not places you can find on a map—they are built from memory, resilience, and the stories we inherit.

RELIEF MAPS
by Peter Chao

transforms fiber into topography, using punch needle and couching techniques to create richly textured landscapes that explore migration, identity, and belonging. Inspired by his father’s journey from China to Taiwan during the 1949 Great Exodus, these works imagine a new terrain—a place shaped by remembrance, loss, and the enduring search for home. You raise it stitch by stitch, making somewhere to stand.

Join us for this moving exhibition that invites viewers to reflect on the landscapes we carry within us.

‘Painting’ 2021 20” x 20” – made in response to Barnett Newman’s ‘zip’ paintings, this work meditates on line and trace — how tone, #texture , and touch can leave a quiet testimony across the surface . Made from polyesters, velvets embroidery floss, thread, silk chiffon.

Peter Chao’s art will be available for just a few more days. If you haven’t seen it yet, now is the time! 💛 This piece, titled Follow Me (14x20”) is part of his Nautical Signals series. Peter examines maritime signal flags as a mode of communication and connects his fiber art work to maritime history. Growing up learning multiple languages, Chao is interested in how language is expressed and the visual forms it assumes.

Peter Chao’s beautiful Waves and Dunes series provides sensory respite. Every piece’s monochromatic color palette offers visual rest, but as you get closer and even touch, his attention to detail and the many soft knotted undulations make you want to look closer and hang out there a while. I just love having Peter’s art in the shop and it has been very well received. Several pieces are still available for one more week.

Go ahead – get close! We’ve become so accustomed to quick, pithy clips that sometimes we forget how to slow down, appreciate layers, subtlety and texture. Take time, look closely, touch. 🐚 Art by Peter Chao @peter_ciao and me, Aline Lindemann @aline.lindemann complement each other beautifully in this little light filled space. And of course, more than a few vintage originals are mixed in!
