A tiny life lost by window collision. by @peterdekens

A moment of calm in the hustle and bustle of turbulent New York.
Here we sail from Manhattan to Staten Island. Together with my son Thomas and Alexandra.
Thomas' first time travelling outside Europe as an 11-year-old. We capture at the same time what we both cherish or find special. Homesick for the most beautiful and longest holiday ever with the three of us.

The book Touch has been sold out for some time now and it has also been 10 years since the photo project was realised. That is why I am issuing a limited edition of some of the most moving photos of Touch, each in an edition of 12 photo prints. Signed and numbered.

The sale of these photo prints will serve to realise the publication of my latest project TICS. This could be a nice end-of-year gift.

Link in bio.

Touch is a moving photo story about Stijn, a young man of 23 years old. He was born blind and lives in a modest apartment somewhere in the city. This is the only place in the world where he can move so freely. The table, the kitchen and the bed aren’t obstacles for him, while being part of his territory, the objects guide him through it. He knows this space inside out. It may be small and limited, but Stijn is not. In fact it’s quite the opposite.

The current issue of South Korean photo magazine Vostok features an 18-page article about my first photo project Touch.

[ No Limits: The senses guiding each other ]. It includes the work of non-disability artists who approach disability from different perspectives.

Back in time ... Vicky (2010) - In the media, poverty is still too often associated with the homeless and refugees. But there is a group of people who fall through the cracks and hardly get any attention. They themselves shun this attention or try to solve their problems on their own, but in doing so, they often end up much deeper in poverty.

Vicky is such a woman, her husband died in 2009 and she lives with her 4 children and 2 dogs in a small social housing. The only reason she is just managing at the moment is because she receives help from an organisation that represents the interests of underprivileged mothers, but she also realises that even a small setback can quickly turn the tide.

With my images, I try to show her situation as realistically as possible, without glossing over it, but also not by making it more distressing. What struck me very quickly was the warmth that prevailed in this family, and this has become the thread running through my project.
