On view in my solo booth at the SPRING/BREAK Art Fair in NYC opening today!

I made this little painting the last time I was exhibiting at SPRING/BREAK in NYC.

I was at the terminal gate at LaGuardia when they announced my flight was a couple hours delayed.

Luckily I had my paintbox with me—with paint on the palette (I check my paint tubes when I fly).

I busted out my paintbox and setup at the gate, finishing up this painting of my roll-aboard and waterbottle just as they announced boarding for my group.

I’m Installing this painting, “The logical order between ideas and things” in my solo booth at @springbreakartshow opening Wednesday in NYC.

I made this painting on Gambier Island in British Columbia, Canada a couple falls ago at my friend Joe’s 100-year-old family cabins’ kitchen.
(With an updated stove 😉)

It was a place I’d been going to with him since we were 14 years old.

Back then we’d wander the forest or the beaches during the day, sailing or pushing boulders off cliffs, and then we’d sneak out at night and head down to the Government warf to talk about life, punk rock, and girls.

This particular trip in 2024 I arrived at the beginning of deer season and was immediately put to work helping his family prepare the buck they’d got that morning—in the woods behind the cabin.

The deer was brought inside in a few pieces and put on the kitchen table where he and his three daughters got to work prepping it for grinding and freezing.

One roast was saved from grinding and put in a Dutch oven for a slow-cooked stew.

I popped out my paint box once the table was cleared of bones and tissue and made this painting.

So much to put in one painting. But I think it’s all in there.

The exhibition features work by artist in the Houston area and is juried by Valerie Cassel Oliver — the curator of modern and contemporary art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
