Presented by The Station and The Holmes à Court Gallery at Afrika House, The Singer and the Red Rose is Muyaka Shitanda’s first solo exhibition in Nairobi, marking years of investigation into performance, self-preservation, and the desire to be seen.

While African portraiture, from Malick Sidibé’s mid-century studio work to Hassan Hajjaj’s contemporary pop spectacles, has long used the lens as a tool of legibility and self-authorship, Shitanda shifts the dynamic from display to withdrawal. His figures dress for the stage, occupy dramatic light, and look directly at us, yet deliberately withhold their facial features, surrendering nothing else.

Exhibition dates: September 19 - October 21, 2026
Viewing by appointment only, art@afrika.house

Stay tuned for upcoming programming and activations ✨

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Afrika House yesterday evening for a special conversation with Aboubakar Fofana @aboubakarfofana . 💙

Aboubakar took us deeper into the world of indigo, material practice, process, and place, sharing insights from decades of research into traditional Malian indigo practices. He reminded us that indigo does not begin in the vat, It begins in the ground — with the seed, the plant, and generations of knowledge.

The evening was a meaningful continuation of his residency at Afrika House from 5–11 September, alongside his representation of Mali at the inaugural Pan-African Architecture Biennale, where his installation traces a journey from plant to pigment, cloth to body.

We are deeply grateful to Aboubakar for sharing his practice and knowledge with us, to Peter Holmes à Court @peterhac for guiding the conversation, and to everyone who joined us and contributed to such a meaningful evening.

Thank you for being part of the conversation. taken in Nairobi, Kenya by @peterhac

Indigo does not begin in the vat.

It begins in the ground, with the seed, and with generations of knowledge required to bring it to life.

At Ngara Spaces @visitngara yesterday, Aboubakar Fofana installed his work for the inaugural Pan-African Architecture Biennale, where he represents Mali. Drawing on decades of research into traditional Malian indigo practices, the installation traces a journey from plant to pigment, from cloth to the body, making visible a knowledge system that continues to be rebuilt, shared, and sustained.

As the Biennale takes shape, we are honoured to witness one of Africa’s leading practitioners of natural indigo presenting a practice that connects land, memory, spirit, and community across time.

Aboubakar is currently in residence at Afrika House from 5-11 September, continuing conversations around art, knowledge, and cultural transmission that sit at the heart of his work. taken in Nairobi, Kenya by @peterhac
