Né en 1953 à New York, Peter Halley s’est imposé sur la scène artistique internationale depuis les années 1980 comme l’un des chefs de file d’une nouvelle abstraction qui recourt à des formes géométriques employées comme métaphores de la société contemporaine. Le peintre new-yorkais est réputé pour ses peintures fluo qui représentent, via des modules rectangulaires ou carrés (les “cellules”) reliés par des lignes (les “conduits”).
L’œuvre principale présentée a été réalisée spécialement pour « L’Almanach 26 » et donnée par l’artiste à la collection du Consortium Museum. Elle reprend la structure de « Altar » (2025), unique œuvre de Peter Halley évoquant la forme du retable traditionnel. Ce polyptyque se déploie de trois manières pour révéler successivement un mur de fausses briques dorées, des monochromes aux couleurs vives et une explosion de lignes convergeant vers un centre concentrique.

🇬🇧 Born in New York in 1953, Peter Halley rose to prominence on the international art scene in the 1980s as one of the leading artists of a new wave of abstraction. This abstract art trend features geometric forms as metaphors for contemporary society. The New York painter is well-known for his “flashy” paintings of rectangular or square units, or “cells,” connected by lines, or “conduits.”
The main work on display was created specifically for “L’Almanach 26” and donated to the Consortium Museum’s collection by the artist. It is based on the structure of “Altar” (2025), Peter Halley’s only piece to evoke the form of a traditional altarpiece. This polyptych unfolds in three stages, successively revealing a wall of faux gold bricks, brightly coloured monochromes and an explosion of lines converging towards a concentric centre.

Last days to see the Peter Halley’s exhibition in Tokyo

This Saturday, August 22, the exhibition “Parable” at Ceysson & Bénétière Tokyo comes to a close. The exhibition features a collection of previously unseen works by Peter Halley, created between 2025 and takes its title, “Parable,” from the monumental centerpiece of the show. Alongside this work, the exhibition features eight paintings and seven works on paper, sophisticated studies that combine digital print bases with pearlescent acrylic to offer a window into the artist’s process. Through these works, Halley reflects on how the geometric patterns of our physical and virtual worlds shape our existence.

Derniers jours pour voir l’exposition de Peter Halley à Tokyo

Ce samedi 22 août s’achève l’exposition « Parable » chez Ceysson & Bénétière Tokyo. L’exposition présente un ensemble d’œuvres inédites de Peter Halley, réalisées entre 2025 et 2026 et emprunte son titre, « Parable », à la pièce monumentale qui en constitue le cœur. À ses côtés figurent huit peintures et sept œuvres sur papier, des études mêlant impression numérique et acrylique nacré, offrant ainsi une immersion dans le processus créatif de l’artiste. À travers ce corpus, Peter Halley nous invite à une réflexion profonde sur la manière dont les schémas géométriques qui nous entourent, qu’ils soient physiques ou virtuels, façonnent notre existence.
