Working at the advent of the internet, personal computers and video games, Peter Halley described the bureaucratic environments of the late 20th century. He addressed urbanisation and industrialisation, considering their impact on a post-industrial society.

Ten years ago, when I was still working in the UK, I visited #peterhalley and we began to plan an exhibition of his 1980s paintings. Back then many of us were picking up the prescient essays that Peter first published in the 1980s and reading (or re-reading) them. One of the paintings we wanted to present was #yesterdaytodaytomorrow in the @mudamlux collection. I left for Germany before it could happen but we picked up the conversation almost four years ago when I started at #mudam.

Peter Halley, Conduits: Paintings from the 1980s opens on 30 March at 7pm and will be on view until 15 October.

A central figure of neo-geo, the postmodern movement of abstract painting that emerged in the 1980s, Halley creates colourful geometrical compositions from forms he calls prisons, cells and conduits.

His geometric patterns take their origin in the figurative, as they are derived, for example, from company flow charts, in reference to the structure
of capitalist society.

The title Sixth Sense refers to M. Night Shyamalan's eponymous film released the same year, anchoring the work in the entertainment industry.

But the real significance of Peter Halley's painting
lies beyond this, in the history of abstraction, with the questioning of modernist ideals.

OPENING SOON: Cartographies of Colour, April 28 – July 15, 2022

We are excited to announce CARTOGRAPHIES OF COLOUR, featuring Sam Gilliam, @peterhalleystudio, @odiliodita and @patsteir.
The exhibition brings together four abstract painters whose work foundationally relies upon color. Whether calibrated through gesture or geometry, the presence of color articulates an existential presence and defines the territory of the image. Each painter asserts in their work specific boundaries, defined by external shape – in the case of Gilliam and Halley – or internal formal resolutions – in the case of Steir and Odili.
If cartography is the drawing or delineation of an area through map making, then in the context of this exhibition, this metaphorical defining of territory is used to understand how the work of each artist remains vital in today’s highly charged, often polarized climate. Colour is never neutral. Conceived by curator David Moos, this presentation refers back to his 2005 exhibition “The Shape of Color: Excursions in Colour Field Art, 1950-2005” where the narrative dimension of abstract painting was explored in relation to formalism.
