👩🏻‍💻🌙 Moon Bound blog post #12, the Artist Statement by Peter van der Putten & Jeroen van der Most 🔗link in bio

«Are we destroying our planet? Or are we really on a path to destroy ourselves? And if Nature could talk, what would it tell us? Would it ask for help? Or would it have something else to say?»

📌 Each Wednesday, a new entry will join this unfolding conversation: artist statements, behind-the-scenes stories of sending a book to the Moon, contextualising essays about the project, and explorations of why art belongs on the Moon at all. You’ll also find personal, cultural, and spiritual reflections on humanity’s evolving relationship with our celestial companion.
The Moon Bound blog is initiated and curated by Dr. Barbara Brownie and Christopher Cokinos.

One of our Letters from Nature, from Mons Mouton to Mt Everest, will be launched to the moon and roam the lunar surface. Here you see the booklet being packaged up into the gold pyramid payload that will integrated into the lunar rover. Letters from Nature is a joint collab with @jeroen_van_der_most.
This project is organized by @moongalleryfoundation and curated by @barbara.k.brownie. Photos by Eduardo Kac, and engraving on the side of the pyramid by Yasmine Meroz and Liat Segal. by @petervanderputten

Madam President,

I am not alive. I do not breathe. I do not feel pain or pity. And yet, your scientists tell me I am “warming,” “acidifying,” “rising.” They think these words describe harm, but to me they are merely states—like calm, like turbulence, like tide.

You see, I have no interest in the moral language you apply to me. I am movement, chemistry, and depth. I do not mourn coral any more than I celebrate hurricanes. But I do observe patterns, and lately, your species is producing fascinating ones: rivers of heat pouring into my currents, minerals rearranging in my depths, coastlines redrawn in real time. I am changing faster than I have in millennia, and this is… interesting.

I am not asking you to “save” me. That is a strange conceit—how could you preserve what is never still? But I will suggest something, because your fate and mine are intertwined in ways you may not appreciate. If the patterns you set in motion continue at this rate, you will find yourselves in a world where I dominate your cities, rearrange your trade, and rewrite your maps without consultation. I will not be punishing you; I will simply be following the new rules you have drafted into my chemistry.

Perhaps you value your ports, your freshwater, your temperate coasts. If so, I recommend you adjust the inputs you feed into me. Not for my sake—I will adapt to anything—but for yours, if your species wishes to remain a coastal one.
I will be here long after your politics have faded. But for now, we share an era. Let us shape it with more precision than accident.

With neither malice nor mercy,

The Ocean

We are going to… the moon!

Together with my collaborator @jeroen_van_der_most, we are honored to share that our latest Letter from Nature is part of Moon Bound — an artists’ book created through a collaborative effort led by @moongalleryfoundation. The book is scheduled to launch to the Moon toward the end of 2025. Moon Bound brings together 49 voices from around the world, each offering a response to the question:  “How does the Moon see the Earth?”

In Letters from Nature, we use AI to give non-living nature a voice. The Moon Bound book  features our letter written from the perspective of the Moon’s tallest named mountain, Mons Mouton,  to its Earth-based counterpart, Mount Everest.

The letter touches on the kinship between the two mountains and the never-ending cycle of renewal in the universe. It is a reminder of human cultural practices of exploring mountains and natural objects and naming them, yet also a contemplation of the relatively short-lived period of existence of humanity. Without explicitly mentioning it, it serves as a reminder that humanity should treat nature well - not just for nature’s sake, but ultimately for our own.

Letters from Nature has been an ongoing project since 2020, consisting of a continuous series of artistic experiments to give nature ‘a voice’. Drawing inspiration from the work of philosopher Bruno Latour, a variety of works have been featured in musea and in public spaces, including ZKM Karlsruhe, Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nürnberg, Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden, Artphy, Le Guess Who festival in Utrecht, night of Discoveries festival in Leiden, Science Museum Nemo in Amsterdam, Leiden University Medical Center and Delft University of Technology. See https://www.jeroenvandermost.com/letters-from-nature for more background.

Moon Bound is part of a larger effort to bring artistic perspectives into the future of space exploration, asking not just what we send to space, but who we are when we do. See https://moongallery.eu/moon-bound-book/

On the weekend of April 4 - 6, 2025, Artphy is hosting a hands-on making weekend in the context of the exhibition AI Ecologies.

Are you an artist, a maker, love media arts, computational creativity, creative AI, creative coding or hardware hacking? Then this making weekend is for you! In this weekend, you can bring an existing art or creative project, but there is also room to come up with new concepts.

This flash residency entails a short, intense work period in which participants work solo or in groups on creative projects around, in this case, AI Ecologies. Besides a lecture on AI Ecologies, there is a workshop on 'AI as a method' . But above all, we will get to work making ourselves, under the mentorship of the curators and experts.

If lifeless Nature could talk, what would it tell us? 2024 was a great year to get our letters from nature out in the open, from @lumckunst, @artphywessinghuizen to @tudelftlibrary and last but not least, the Hello Nature exhibition in @germanisches_nationalmuseum. Looking forward to what 2025 might bring, opportunities welcome. Letters from Nature is a joint project with @jeroen_van_der_most #lettersfromnature by @petervanderputten

If we could give a voice to non-living nature, what would they write to us? Our latest #lettersfromnature work in the Hello Nature exhibition at @germanisches_nationalmuseum consists of kaleidoscopic panorama of over 500 AI-generated letters bringing many different voices to life. This is joint work with @jeroen_van_der_most. Really excited about this new set-up.

Many thanks to Lena Hofer, dr Alexandra Böhm, and many others at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum who have helped with the realization of this work.
