Success looks different for every dog and every family.

Swipe through to see some of the dogs and families PG PUP has been able to support, and just how far our community reaches šŸ’œ

Sky (Ft Washington) - we’ve been supporting Sky’s guardian since last year, when they came to us with the challenge of needing to get her spayed and vaccinated. Through building this relationship, we found out that Sky’s incredible guardian was struggling to care for her after the birth of her special needs child. We moved Sky to temporary foster to help give some relief to the family, but after she came back home they realized they couldn’t continue to provide for her needs. In partnership with @lovepawspg , Sky’s new family was found and she’s loving life with a doggy sibling. Thanks to @blockheadconservationsociety for temp fostering, @abria.ch for supporting, @veterinaryparkpotomac for helping us with Sky’s allergies, @sarahebeatty for transporting!

Ace/Dolph (Greenbelt) - is back with his guardian after temp foster! His loving guardian completed rehab and we are so grateful to his temp fosters (Silvia, @meant2beeloved and @lancellott1 ) and to Lindsay for supporting this family the whole time.

Cupcake (District Heights) - The Alvaranga family needed some support after her brother Zeus’s passing, so we’ve provided training with @force_free_dc and supplies to help Cupcake transition to her only-dog new status and manage the grief of losing her brother last month to Kidney disease.

Litter of puppies (Clinton, MD) - successfully had their first round of vaccines and we are offering guidance for rehome & extending offer of alteration free of charge for local adopters w/in their first year of life. Thanks to @lancellott1 and @mustloverugs for supporting the family and to Liz D for transporting the wiggly pups to their appointments!

Bella & Cali (Ft Washington) - Got these cutie pups vaxxed. Thanks to @lancellott1 and @mustloverugs for setting this up

Biscoff (College Park) - neuter plus ongoing support for training. Thanks to @mustloverugs for setting this up and to @diamondspawsandmischief for assisting with ongoing training support.

šŸŽ‰ PG COUNTY BREED BAN REPEALED šŸŽ‰
Effective today, 2/2/26

And during Black History Month, no less šŸ’œ

After nearly 30 years, PG residents can now legally own or foster any breed, including pit bulls. Dogs are evaluated by behavior, not appearance, with an emphasis on education, safety, and shared responsibility.

What this means for our community:
• Fair, consistent rules for all dog owners
• Support for responsible pet guardianship
• A safer county built through prevention, not punishment

What pet owners should know:
• Dogs must be licensed
• Leash and containment rules apply county-wide
• Force-free training and early support make a difference

PG PUP is here to support you:
• Free Pet Parenting Class (force-free & bilingual):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbWAif_Jgxg
• Dog licensing (required in PG County):
https://individualanimallicense.princegeorgescountymd.gov

This moment belongs to all of us.
Save this, share it, and help a neighbor stay informed. taken in Prince George's County, Maryland by @petunityproject

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR PG COUNTY RESIDENTS
As of February 2, 2026, pit bulls and terrier mixes are LEGAL to foster and adopt in Prince George’s County following the repeal of breed-specific legislation that had been in place since 1997.

We are not the animal shelter, and we are not an animal rescue. We are an advocacy organization working hard to support keep pets and their families together in Prince George’s County, MD. For more information or to get involved please visit our website at PetUnityProject.org

@beyondabuddy_pg is a new nonprofit dedicated to helping shelter pets thrive at Prince George’s County Animal Shelter

A note of gratitude & perspective: We appreciate the Prince George’s County Animal Shelter for their transparency and for guiding us when our community needs to step up most. We also want to acknowledge the shelter staff, as the reality of possible euthanasia takes an immense emotional toll. Overcrowding is a nationwide crisis, not unique to PG County, and even ā€œno killā€ shelters are facing these heartbreaking decisions. If you’re feeling anger or frustration, we encourage you to redirect that energy into joining this community and being part of taken in Prince George's County, Maryland by @petunityproject

This sweet older Pittie was found in Greenbelt, MD and has been cared for by a Good Samaritan, hoping to find her owner. When no owner came forth, she contacted @petunityproject to ask for help.

Our Medical Coordinators noted some concerning symptoms and recognized that this wasn’t just any guardian support case - we were looking at a medical emergency. Pyometra is a dangerous infection that can spread throughout an unspayed dog’s uterus and this sweet girl had all of the signs that’s what she was experiencing.

Thanks to our good friends at @greenbeltanimalshelter for transporting, she’s now at @princegeorgesanimalhospital and we’ve covered the cost of her initial exam and bloodwork. Next step is a lifesaving spay but a pyometra spay is expensive - we are looking at a $3500 bill to save her life.

Can you contribute funds to help us get this sweetheart the surgery that will save her life? Our emergency medical fund is depleted after our last medical emergency: https://donorbox.org/the-rocky-fund-emergency-vetting-for-owned-pets

Any amount helps!

A little reminder, featuring one very handsome Theo ā˜ŗļø

THIS IS ONE WAY WE HELP KEEP PETS OUT OF THE SHELTER

PG PUP offers financial support to pet guardians in Prince George’s County, MD who need help covering basic veterinary care, including wellness exams, vaccinations, and spay/neuter.

The only qualification is being a PG resident. Assistance is intended for pet guardians who are experiencing hardship/barriers/challenges etc. and need support accessing care. We’re a small nonprofit run entirely by volunteers, and we do our best to stretch the funding and donations we receive to help as many pets and families as we can.

As you can see here, little cutie baby Theo recently completed his first appointment and he’ll be back in October for his boosters.

If you’re a PG County pet guardian who could use some help with veterinary costs, you can learn more and request assistance at:

petunityproject.org/veterinary-and-care

or email communitysupport@petunityproject.org

We’re so grateful to our vol Laura @diamondspawsandmischief for the work she’s doing to support Theo and his family šŸ’œ

And a shoutout to @brandywinespca_dc for being part of the veterinary care community helping pets like Theo get the care they need.

Financial hardship shouldn’t mean a pet has to go without basic veterinary care. Please feel free to share this resource! taken in Prince George's County, Maryland by @petunityproject

STOP BLAMING THE URGENT LIST.

There is a lot of conversation happening right now about the Prince George’s County shelter, transparency, and the urgent list. We have a more in-depth post coming about overcrowding, but this couldn’t wait.

We are at risk of losing the valuable transparency we have worked so hard to build. Every week, the shelter shares its list of urgent dogs at risk of euthanasia with us so that we can disseminate that information to the public.

Do you know why they don’t share it themselves? Public backlash. In the past, sharing the urgent list has created such a hostile environment that the shelter stopped sharing it publicly. And when that happens, everyone loses. We have worked SO HARD to build trust and increase transparency. Shelter Director David Fisher and his team have been working incredibly hard to turn this situation around, and we should be encouraging that transparency, not punishing it.

Yes, the urgent list is ugly. Euthanasia is ugly. If the list makes you uncomfortable, let that discomfort move you to action. You don’t have to like the list. But directing your anger at the people documenting an impossible situation doesn’t change the reality. The shelter did not create the overcrowding crisis by making a list.

The list is doing exactly what it is supposed to do: sound the alarm. And there is evidence that it works.

The goal should not be to stop sharing the urgent list with the public. The goal is to get to a place where we don’t need an urgent list at all. Until then, these dogs deserve to be seen & the public deserves to be able to help.

The shelter is also actively exploring additional methods to improve outcomes for the animals in its care. If you have ideas, you are always welcome to share them.

If you need somewhere to put your anger or are looking to help, please consider putting that energy directly toward the animals and the people caring for them.

Volunteer. Foster. Take a dog on a Dog Day Out. Donate supplies. Offer your skills or services. Make a financial gift. Share the dogs who need homes.

Please, please save and share this post. And stay tuned for more information about overcrowding coming soon. taken in Prince George's County, Maryland by @petunityproject

Nova needs a little help šŸ’œ

Her knee surgery is estimated to cost nearly $6,000, which is a huge expense for her family.

Nova is a 2 year old Pittie/Dalmatian mix, so she is a mix of two highly active breeds and is full of energy. She desperately wants to run, play, and be a normal goofy young dog, but her luxating patellas (loose kneecaps) mean she can’t stay active for very long.

This restricted mobility isn’t just a frustration for Nova, it can also increase her risk of obesity and other health complications. Her knees are significantly affecting her quality of life, and often make her seem much older than she actually is.

Her guardian is saving toward surgery, and we’re hoping the PG PUP community can help get Nova there a little sooner.

If you can donate, amazing. If you can’t, sharing helps too. Let’s get this energetic girl back to running, playing, and being the happy go lucky 2 year old she is šŸ’œ

Patchy completed his FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) surgery! Patchy and his family have been supported by PUP for over a year now. This poor dog had multiple severe orthopedic issues that required surgery. We successfully fundraised for his left knee TPLO and it was completed in March of this year. After his TPLO recovery, Patchy still had difficulty walking more than a block and his x-rays revealed a significant hip issue, which had caused the head of his femur to fracture and scar tissue to build up over time, limiting his movement. Thank you very much to the donors who have contributed toward the cost of Patchy’s surgeries and his ongoing care (including support for pain management medication from @thehanselfoundation !)

If you’d like to send Patchy a recovery gift, his wishlist is here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1EI0U3BZ333U1?ref_=wl_share taken in Prince George's County, Maryland by @petunityproject

WE GOT AN AWARD!!! šŸ„¹šŸ’œšŸ¾

We’re so incredibly grateful to @humaneworldforanimals for honoring us with the FIRST EVER 2026 Heather Carpenter and Buster Service Award!

We’re so grateful to everyone who has taken a chance on us, trusted us, supported this work, and helped us build a community around the idea that keeping people and their pets together matters.

Thank you @humaneworldforanimals for seeing this work, believing in it, and for being such a huge part of helping us make it happen. We genuinely could not do this without you.

And of course, thank you to every person who has shared a post, donated, fostered, volunteered, shown up, advocated, or simply believed that these dogs and their families deserve better.

We’re VERY proud of this one šŸ’œšŸ¾ taken in Prince George's County, Maryland by @petunityproject
