Last week I had the honor of showing my collection of artwork in Art Start’s Emerging Artist Residency retrospective exhibition. For the past seven months, I have been creating a project, titled ‘THE RAT’ which navigates the relationships between myself, rats, and New York City. I’m so grateful for this experience, my fellow residents, and the ability to create art in this city; I truly am the luckiest gal. You Can’t Spell Stars Without Rats (project 1 of THE RAT)

I’m so happy to finally share the piece that started my entire residency project. While this project’s primary location resides in New York, the inspiration for this painting came from a gas station in Florida. At night, the gas station shines red light, in order to see turtles crossing on the ground. In a journal entry about this sight, I wrote: The red glow of the Circle K encapsulated the gas station’s area in its own plane, nothing else around it. It’s almost as if we had been observing it from an outside void, dripping and oozing in sparkly darkness, until we stepped forward and materialized into red. I imagine a line of turtles fading into red and then swimming back to the ocean of darkness.

Obviously, I changed the animal to rats to represent this image because my goal with this project was to “shine a red light” on them and introduce a different way to see the animal; I want my audience to see a certain amount of humanity in rats.

I am also elated to share that this is my first award winning painting! It was selected for the Circle Foundation for the Arts’ Creative Excellence Award! This painting is so special to me and I am so proud of the recognition it has received❤️🐀⭐️

which witch (project 4 of THE RAT)

Witches and rats have held similar interpretations in history, as they both have negative reputations and are blamed for crimes they did not necessarily commit. Florence and the Machine’s “Which Witch” provided an opportunity for me to explore the ritualistic nature of rats, how their dreams mirror those of humans, how they walk the same paths over and over, how their bodies hold memories the same way that we do. Using inspirations such as Yellowjackets, Piranesi, Us, and Robert Sullivan’s “Rats,” my newest characters live in a land of rats, ghosts, memories, and and unknown places that somehow feel familiar.

I am so happy to share my new music video, which was made as a part of @artstartorg Emerging Artist Residency Program. Last night I had the opportunity to premiere this short film at our retrospective, and I am so excited to finally let the world see it. Thank you endlessly to my amazing crew and network of people who made this dream into a reality. I am so lucky to work with such talented people❤️⭐️🐀

‘it was special, wasn’t it?’
‘yeah it was. but, this is going to be special too.’

after years and years of dreaming, I now live in nyc. Reese and I took the train from Denver to Chicago to New York and had a marvelous time, thanks to sleeper cars and pretty views and great food all along the way. it was one of the most precious experiences of my life. I’m going to miss Boulder; it will always be such an important place for me. but, I am so excited to say that Brooklyn is my new home and can’t wait for my next venture. Stay tuned folks, good things are on the horizon🐦‍🔥<3
