Preschool for All needs our voices.

Friends of Preschool for All is encouraging educators, families, providers, and community members to get involved as Multnomah County makes important decisions about the future of Preschool for All.

There are several ways to help:

• Submit written testimony to the County Commission.
• Sign the petition supporting full funding.
• Attend the Back to Preschool Picnic on August 12.
• If you’re an Oregon preschool educator, complete the anonymous Preschool Educator Workforce Survey to help highlight educator experiences and workforce issues.

A few people have asked what this page is about, so I wanted to be clear.

I support the goals of Preschool for All and want to see the program succeed.

I also believe the educators working directly with children every day should have a voice in conversations about the future of the program.

This page supports:

• Strong classrooms
• Fair compensation
• Educator voice
• Transparency
• A sustainable workforce

Not everyone will agree on every issue, and that’s okay. The goal isn’t to create an echo chamber. It’s to create a space where Preschool for All educators can share perspectives, experiences, and ideas.

The people working in classrooms every day have valuable insight, and those perspectives deserve to be heard. by @pfaeducatorsunited

Sharing a free training option for Oregon early childhood educators. The ePyramid modules are online, self-paced, and available in English and Spanish, with options for preschool, infant/toddler care, and inclusion.

The Oregon Registry system isn’t fair to many experienced teachers. Your step doesn’t tell the whole story of what you know or bring to a classroom. But it still affects pay and job opportunities, so access to free training is important while we push for changes.

Teachers should also have paid time to complete professional development.

PEL is recruiting new members for the PFA Advisory Committee, but there is still no dedicated seat for a frontline PFA educator.

I’m asking the current members to push PEL and County leadership on this. Teachers shouldn’t have to rely on other people at the table to speak for them.

If you have a seat at the table, use it to make room for educators who are actually working in PFA classrooms. by @pfaeducatorsunited

31 educators and staff shared their experiences working in Preschool for All.

The results show a complicated picture. Some respondents report meaningful improvements, including higher compensation. At the same time, there are significant concerns around burnout, planning time, inclusion support, staffing, retention, and educator voice in decision-making.

This is a small, self-selected sample and isn’t meant to represent every PFA educator. But it adds an important perspective to the conversation about how the workforce is experiencing the program as it grows.

Preschool for All’s success depends on the people doing this work every day. Their experiences need to be part of the conversation. by @pfaeducatorsunited

says providers are the employer when teachers bring up labor issues. Okay.

But those same providers can still be promoted by PFA, participate in advisory spaces, and help shape the program — even after PFA has been given documentation of serious labor concerns.

Meanwhile, most PFA teachers aren’t unionized. We’re at-will employees, and speaking up can put our jobs at risk.

You can’t be hands-off when it comes to workers and hands-on when it comes to providers.

I support Preschool for All. That’s exactly why I keep pushing this.

Public money needs public accountability, and teachers need an actual voice in the program we make possible.

The workers are the program.

Reminder — our first PFA Educators United virtual meetup is this Tuesday, September 15, from 7–8:30pm!

This meetup is just for frontline educators — no providers or administrators. You don’t have to currently be teaching in a PFA classroom to come. If you teach or have taught at a site that participates in Preschool for All, you’re welcome. PFA affects the whole workplace, not just the teachers assigned to PFA-funded classrooms.

And there’s no pressure to participate or speak. If you’d rather keep your camera off and just listen, that’s completely fine. Come however you’re comfortable.

It’s a chance to meet other teachers, hear what people are seeing at different sites, and start figuring out what we want educator voice in PFA to look like going forward.

RSVP at the link in our bio to get the Google Meet link. Hope to see you Tuesday! by @pfaeducatorsunited

reached out to AFSCME Local 88 today about something I think the labor movement needs to be paying attention to.

Many of the County employees working within PFA have union representation. Many of the teachers they’re working with inside privately operated PFA classrooms do not.

I’m asking Local 88 to support PFA educators having meaningful representation and a real voice in the program we’re actually working in.

I’ll share an update when I hear back.

PFA has systems for checking in with providers and monitoring programs. I’ve been trying to understand where the same kind of direct connection exists with the educators working inside them.

This isn’t about PFA handling every workplace dispute or acting as HR. It’s about a pretty basic question: where does workforce oversight actually happen?

Especially for educators working at nonunion sites. by @pfaeducatorsunited
