@nytimes “When Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony play like that, they play with a primal sort of mastery — as if they are revealing that this is what an orchestra is supposed to sound like.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's “Dvořák: Symphony No. 9 & Carlos Simon: Four Black American Dances” is an AllMusic Editor's choice!

“The pairing highlights an interesting connection between Dvořák's fascination with American musical traditions and Simon's direct engagement with African American dance and musical practices. The result is a program in which a well-established symphonic work and a contemporary composition illuminate different aspects of American musical identity. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's polished ensemble playing and Honeck's detailed approach give both scores a strong sense of rhythmic character, orchestral color, and structural clarity.” —Jana Bojovic by @pghsymphony

New article @triblive

“We’re just back off a whirlwind tour of Europe. We were across six countries. There were 13 concerts in total. So it was quite a large-scale tour,” said Mary Persin, vice president of artistic programming at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. “We’re in the sequence now of every other year to be touring internationally to those great stages and musical centers of the world.”

Today, Anne Martindale Williams played her final concert as Principal Cello and member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Anne joined the PSO in 1976 and was named Principal Cello in 1979. In the 50 years since, she has played thousands of concerts at Heinz Hall, toured the world with her colleagues, and taught countless students the love of music and skill of the cello.

Her last performances featured one of the most beloved cello solos in the repertoire, and one of her own favorites: the slow movement of Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto.

Thank you, Anne, for leading, teaching, and being with us! 🎻
