Assistant Librarian Sheryl Hadeka from our featured Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra speaks on how performing influences and helps her role in the music library. She also sheds light on how busy a typical music librarian is throughout their day. Read on to find out!

•What instrument do you play?
I started on piano when I was little and still play horn in the Pittsburgh Opera and Music in the Mountains Festival in Colorado. I’ve always felt that being a performer helps my music librarianship because I get to see and use the music myself.

•How did you come to be a Music Librarian?
I started working in the ensemble library during my undergrad at the Eastman School of Music. I loved being able to go through the library stacks and make my own “special” parts while I was a student there. I recently realized that much of my library career has been finding opportunities where ever I was as a horn player and making friends with the music librarians who were willing to help me learn and practice.

•What is something people do not always know about your job?
It’s always amazing how many concerts I work on in one day. Sometimes it’s up to 10 different programs: unbooking last night’s show, booking next week’s, identifying instrumentation for an excerpt to be used in March, bowings for a concert in 3 weeks, shipping scores for a December concert, and more!

The “Holy Dance” a spontaneous dance birthed in the Black American (Pentecostal) church where people move in worship and celebration to God.

This dance is not only an act of worship to God, but also an act of surrender to Him to free them of the cares of the world.

This particular section of “Four Black American Dances” is my favorite because it is a part of my upbringing, but also is deeply connected and rooted in Gospel Music.

And Gospel music not only informs American culture, but also is the backbone of American music styles/ genres.

Have you ever wondered what a world-class orchestra and pianist work on in rehearsal?

CMU Music Preparatory School students had the opportunity to find out last month at the Dress Rehearsal for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Gala. After watching the open rehearsal, students met with Lang Lang and Maestro Manfred Honeck for a chance to learn about this process.

The CMU Music Preparatory School thanks Maestro Honeck and Lang Lang for giving these young musicians such a memorable peek behind the scenes.

Tap dance…

…is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion.

For this movement in “Four Black American Dances” I have emulated the sound of the tap with the side rim of the snare drum in the percussion section. The strings play in very short, disconnected passages alongside the brass drawing on jazz harmonies.

This week we are featuring the fabulous musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, who recently went on a 13 concert European tour, including performances in Hamburg, Amsterdam, Warsaw, Salzburg, & more!

Amongst their travels, the PSO also recently visited the Krannert Center at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to perform Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 , Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with Yefim Bronfman, and Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances. With Maestro Manfred Honeck’s contract extended through the 2032-33 season, they are set for a packed season of concerts.

A special quality about this group is that they often organize community activities off-stage and on Saturday, October 24 will hold their 10th annual Musicians of Steel 5K. This event raises funds for access to music for students across the Pittsburgh area. What an admirable way to put the musicians in the field and grow the arts to ensure classical music is perpetuated in the Steel City!

Stopped horns I had never heard before, a Passion March, an emotional earthquake at 22:47. A Ninth of questioning more than certainty.
