Unteathered’s Scary Tour is on ! The Trio featuring Calvin Weston Timothy Ragsdale will start in Philly and go to Schenectady, NYC, Charlottesville and Baltimore. With Nizar Dahmani rounding out the trio in Brooklyn for a Morocco Session of the trio.

Untethered is a collective led by Paul Giess (Ropeadope) playing what their drummer, Grant Calvin Weston (Ornette Coleman, John Medeski, Vernon Reid) calls “Spontaneous Creative Composition”. Timothy Ragsdale is their bassist. Their most recent album “Grasping for the Moon” was featured as album of the Day on Bandcamp in August 2025. Peter Margasak writes for Bandcamp Daily - "the music is in constant flux, opening up and tightening, cooling down and catching fire, riding stasis and exploding with hyperactive motion." The group plays a genre crossing style of improvisation that holds a deep pocketed funk next to intimate chamber music and the raw energy of a punk band next to a sensitive ballad.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16th: Untethered!!

Untethered is a Philadelphia-based collective led by Paul Giess (Ropeadope) playing what their drummer, free jazz legend Grant Calvin Weston (Ornette Coleman, John Modeski, Vernon Reid), calls “Spontaneous Creative Composition”.

As a trio, the group plays a genre crossing style of improvisation that holds a deep pocketed funk next to intimate chamber music & the raw energy of a punk band next to a sensitive ballad, bringing fire to the stage and keeping listeners guessing and yearning for more. Ensemble members have included Calvin West, Brandon Ross, Kayla Childs, Lee Clarke, Max Hoenig, Matthew Little, Rodrigo Pichardo, and bassist Timothy Ragsdale, who was featured on Untethered’s most recent release ‘Phronesis’ and will be performing on 10/16 alongside Paul & Grant.

Opening the evening will be Capital Region-based experimental / ambient jazz trio 4i’s, one of our favorite groups here at the Van Dyck! They’ve got an all new set of music that’s right in line with Unthetered’s ‘Spontaneous Creative Composition’, and will kicking things off right at 7pm for us.

Untethered is a collective playing “Spontaneous Collective Creation.” Their album Grasping for the Moon was featured as Album of the Day on Bandcamp, with Peter Margasak writing that “the music is in constant flux, opening up and tightening, cooling down and catching fire, riding stasis and exploding with hyperactive motion.” This lineup brings in Moroccan drummer and percussionist Nizar Dahmani, whose work fuses traditional Amazigh and Arabic rhythms with global styles — deepening the group’s genre-crossing ethic.
