Wind wav weaver - Untethered

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It’s hard to believe my residency and developmental workshop for Sounding Eliza was already over 6 weeks ago. What a magical time of play we had in this work in August at The Colored Girls Museum! Thank you to @fowilson for trusting me with this work. Thank you to every collaborator who made that workshop what it was!

Sitting with three waves of Black migration to and across the Great Lakes region, Sounding Eliza conjures and recollects the sounds of Black freedom seeking. We spent our time in workshop sitting with these waves.

Performing Thursday, October 15th 8PM at The Perch located at 2008 E. Arizona Street (2 1/2 blocks from the York/Dauphin MFL/L station) in Philadelphia - Untethered!

Untethered, a collective formed by trumpeter Paul Giess in the summer of 2024, plays what the drummer Grant Calvin Weston dubs spontaneous creative composition. Their album “Grasping for the Moon” received critical acclaim and was featured as album of the day on Bandcamp in August, which wrote “the music is in constant flux, opening up and tightening, cooling down and catching fire, riding stasis and exploding with hyperactive motion.”

Through inventive and unpredictable improvisation, they display musical personalities that have range and depth, holding a deep pocketed funk next to chamber music-esque sound design. Intricate, profound and otherworldly, the ensemble’s inventive nature allows each performance to be a one-of-a-kind experience to resonate with their audiences. -WMRA

Untethered is a collective led by Paul Giess (Ropeadope) playing what their drummer, Grant Calvin Weston (Ornette Coleman, John Medeski, Vernon Reid) calls “Spontaneous Creative Composition”. Timothy Ragsdale is their bassist. Their most recent album “Grasping for the Moon” was featured as album of the Day on Bandcamp in August 2025. Peter Margasak writes for Bandcamp Daily - "the music is in constant flux, opening up and tightening, cooling down and catching fire, riding stasis and exploding with hyperactive motion." The group plays a genre crossing style of improvisation that holds a deep pocketed funk next to intimate chamber music and the raw energy of a punk band next to a sensitive ballad.
