Tenured* and promoted! Many thanks to everyone who supported me along the way. It's been a very long journey and every like on social media, encouraging comment in person, all the kind words through email, many opportunities extended through invites or shared through posts, grace from students who knew I was spent for the day and accepted my emails 2 minutes after immediate, and every cookie from friends that tided me over to the next class or meeting have all been helpful. Those of you in the know are very well aware that I have no safety net, so I'm grateful for my small community for seeing this first-generation college grad through to tenure as an Associate Professor of Art starting August 2026. Stay tuned. More to come on this journey.

*Alabama Senate just passed HB580 on April 9th to erode tenure and faculty governance so we're waiting to see what tenure means anymore by @phammilliangiang

"Cats, Kitsch, and Cartoons: Transforming Cliches in Art and Design"

The murky notion of cliché and trite art still elude many students as they try to grasp the semiotics of visual art while juggling craft and composition in art and design classrooms.

With ubiquitous cuteness in current visual culture and notions of ‘cool’ art in pop culture, it is in students’ and an art program’s best interest to examine and investigate these ideas.

Instead of avoiding this domain altogether, this panel brings together strategies from art and design educators that allow students to face this problem head on and find workable solutions as
they develop their voice, practice, and general art interest. The goal is to aid students in defining, digesting, and determining the appropriate pathways as they navigate kitsch, cliché, sentimentality, and triteness in their individual creative investigation, and the possibilities of these lessons in their
future conceptual exploration.

FATE @foundationsinart Call for Presentations is open from now till October 11th, 2026 for the 2027 conference in Charlotte, North Carolina from April 1-3.

Submit your presentation, project share, or completed panel at this link: https://app.oxfordabstracts.com/stages/81118/submitter

Conference information: https://www.foundationsart.org/conference/2027-refocus/

Image text: "To Re[FOCUS] is a radical act of reassessment. Whether sharpening instructional methodologies in art, design, and art history or exploring the materiality of studio practice, we seek panel submissions that refocus the status quo through a balance of serious inquiry and hopeful curiosity.

"The conference theme of Re[FOCUS] invites artists, designers, educators, graduate students and administrators to investigate and challenge the core of our creative and pedagogical practices in our contemporary moment of dramatic change and uncertainty."

Here's a plug for my panel: Critiquing as Peer Coaching

"The current crop of students is showing less interest in critiques and for good reasons. As Gen Z will soon make way for Gen Alpha, we are seeing a different type of peer-to-peer engagement. Critique methods must also adapt to capture student interests and foster growth in a studio art classroom. In reframing critiques as peer coaching, this panel invites trials, methods, and ideas on how to create a more welcoming environment for the current generation and to anticipate the next generation of college students. How can critiques—or feedback in general—foster a supportive environment among students and between students and teacher? What small or large steps need to happen for this to be successful? What models are available and have been trialed successfully in the classroom? How can critiques serve stubborn students and those who are too cool to learn? Presentations can focus on mid-process critiques, summative assessment, and a variety of other milestones and methods to build a successful peer coaching environment." by @phammilliangiang

Had a blast talking to students at Troy University @troy_art_and_design about my work and practice. What a beautiful campus and great energy from students. (I haven't updated in a while but I'm alive and doing all the teacher things.) by @phammilliangiang

School started and I've been buried under a mountain of work. I'm still alive! In-between mounds of paperwork, my bio cat Fry Dei helps me decompress with brushwork practice. This is the only drawing of dogbane that he didn't help smudge. by @phammilliangiang
