We Implode is out now

I wrote this song across the course of a decade, both inside the whirlwind and after the dust settled – it’s a dialogue with a past self about a doomed relationship and maybe an experiment in time travel, a way of sealing a lesson I learned.

This image features an assemblage of my great-mother Zofia Ziemba’s glove collection. Zofia arrived in the United States from Poland on July 18th, 1907 at the age of 21. She would go on to be an accomplished seamstress in Detroit and beloved Busia to her descendants. I now possess many garments that she owned, and some that she made, along with her sewing machine. I love imagining the traces of the past that live inside these items, the lessons that maybe they can transfer to me, prayers of hope, of transformation, of love from beyond the grave.

Thank you to the brilliant people who helped bring this song into the world today.

Co-writer Jack Kredell, we started writing this in maybe 2014? Who could have imagined the journey one song could take
Co-producer and dear collaborator @phantomcenter who engineered, mixed, mastered, played drums, played bass, and has been the fiercest and kindest of musical kin I could ever imagine
Guitar deity @fake_willi I love it when you show me something new in a song I could never have conceived and it is perfect
Full ass string section all by @mmartassofia , who very kindly and intuitively wrangled my tortured arrangements into the sort of baroque pop I’ve always dreamed of writing
Photo by @studiocodycloud , who was so extremely patient and kind as we painstakingly hung 100 year old gloves on monofilament and then equally patient when I wanted to futz with this image a whole bunch
@acegamblazace who helped with the entire glove apparatus and also with just… everything.

More to come! Music video drops at 8am PST/ 11am EST – you’ll hear from me again so very soon. by @phantomcenter

The album Hourglass by Broommaker is out today. We hope you’ll have a chance to listen and that you may like what you hear. You can listen on streaming platforms and at the Bandcamp link in my bio.

You can preorder CDs and vinyl, shipping around June 15 when I’m back from tour. I’ll have physical copies on the road, and also at our homecoming show at the Takoma Spark at the School of Musical Traditions (dates below).

I wrote these songs over the last few years. We put together a band of Rebecca Berlin (piano), Hester Doyle (cello), and Annette Wasilik (guitar and voice), with contributions from Ahren Buchheister (dobro, mandolin, pedal steel) and Don Godwin (percussion). Don also engineered and mixed the album.

The album artwork is by Adam de Boer.

May 22 is a significant date for this music as the birthdate of the artist Marisol whose work has inspired much, including the existence and band name of my old band Teething Veils. My old band The Antiques released our first album Sewn with Stitches on May 22, 2007, and Teething Veils released our third album Sea and Sun on May 22, 2017.

Broommaker shows:

May 30 at 3pm in Washington, DC at Petworth Porchfest at 1127 Allison St NW w/The Icy Moons (2pm), zhtml (4pm).

sometimes you have an interview scheduled during a particularly charged week in America, and it feels fortunate that that interview is with a band that has long confronted that country's political standing in the world.

such is the case with episode 1024 of the Kreative Kontrol Yeah, Right podcast because Hugh McElroy and Mike Kanin from Black Eyes have returned to discuss their first new album in 20 years, 'Hostile Design,' the state of American socio-political discourse, the inspiring resistance that D.C. residents have exhibited as the federal government has sent military personnel and ICE agents into the area, American history and foreign policy and where power truly lies, songwriting themes and topics explored by Black Eyes, working with Ian MacKaye as a producer, tour dates, other future plans, and much more.

it was nice to reconnect with Hugh and Mike, who are very thoughtful and talented people. please listen to 'Hostile Design' by Black Eyes when it's released on October 10, and hear our Kreative Kontrol conversation today, on a podcast player near you. thanks!

Happy Birthday to me and Big News! Revealed yesterday, I’m announcing the release of my new album, Psychic/Body Sound System on Relative Pitch Records on November 29th! It is my first album under my own name in many years and my first ever album totally solo!

Though this album is fully improvised, I mean for it to be felt as a story, or maybe even as the setting for creating stories, like the rules of a table top role playing game. As I assembled them into the album, I began hearing these 11 tracks as a journey, almost like a altered-dimensional day’s work clocking and clocking out, into, through, and out of a fantastical, impossible space. Or maybe it struck me like a pilgrimage where one enters a place that’s simultaneaously in our world, but also sublimely separate from it, experiencing something transformational while in there, but upon leaving is left with mostly the echoes of being “elsewhere.” That’s where I hope this album will take you someplace similar on one or many listens.

Even though I’m the only person you hear on this album, creating this whole presentation with the music, art, words, took a cohort of brilliant collaborators. Surrounding the music is the absolutely stunning artwork by queer, fat-centric artist James Dillenbeck, and enveloping words by revolutionary writer/artist/musician Alex Smith (who also came up with the great title!). Seriously. I mean, look at that cover! And wait until you read Alex’s words for each track.

Also fundamental to the sound was the expertise and thoughtfulness of Don Godwin, who engineered, mixed, and mastered the record. He took my circular breathed sub-bass drones, my free jazz declamations and all the other sounds I made and helped transform them into sonic geography and architecture.

So get excited! Huge thanks to Kevin Reilly for his patient support! Please pre-save this on your streaming services (link in bio)! Preview and presale coming your way this Friday!!!

Love,
Dan
