📣Honored to share that Songs from the Beit Midrash is on this year’s @grammys ballot in the brand new Best Traditional Folk Album category! This new category carves out space for music drawn from inherited folk traditions - lifting up the role song plays as a language for communicating cultural heritage and anchoring communal connection. I am grateful to share this music more widely with the @recordingacademy community, and bring the sounds of Jewish song, prayer, and creative energy into the ears of artists and creators passionate about song as a vehicle of communal expression! Thank you to the @grammys and @recordingacademy for creating this space to build musical connections, to the team who worked together to put this album out, to @hadarinstitute and our label Rising Song Records, and to all who are listening and voting this season! First round voting runs from October 12-22nd - thanks for considering! 🔗 Explore Songs from the Beit Midrash at link in bio! #FYC #GRAMMYS #tradfolk #newjewishmusic

The gates are still open as Sukkot approaches. Let’s walk through with the courage to sing out that which is most internally vulnerable - our innermost prayers. Our lady of the perpetually dirty feet presents a new song for you, Open Up, my last offering before my album The Braid arrives on October 2nd. “Go, swallow me whole,” I dare in this song of that terrifying moment when you meet someone new and you really like them, and you ask yourself, will I allow them to see the parts of myself that I normally hide? Will I allow myself to truly be seen? And then a deeper question starts to gurgle up, Do I even see myself as I really am? And is there something hopeful in the accidental legacies within me? There is certainly something hopeful in allowing yourself to be seen, and believing there is someone who will see your ugliness and love you anyways. I had a poem by @anna_y2k on this subject on a magnet on my fridge at the time I was writing Open Up, and the song began as a poem that emerged while doing a poetry challenge with Anna and Kelly Xio / @ohgeography It took shape slowly and was initially performed at poetry readings in Los Angeles, my first time ever doing that. Reading the words without the music felt like a whole new level of naked. The words started taking on new meanings and talking back to me, as happens with songs sometimes – you all probably know this already, but sometimes a person writes a song because they have something to say to the world, and sometimes it’s the reverse, and the world has something to say to you. You tap into it through that mysterious force that can happen while jotting down lines on a page, but don’t really grasp it yet. When that happens, you might (and must) sing the song a hundred times before you start catching wise. To me, this song is very emblematic of the album that I share soon with you, and the central symbol of it, the braid. Can we weave it all in? Can we view those little demons and goblins and intergenerational wounds as a history of hope, as something we were put here to work on, to heal in new ways and maybe not solve but be part of that legacy, that braid, stretching out into the future world that we’ll never see but will inhabit through traces and sly gestures? I can’t wait for you to hear the full thing, but for now, here is Open Up! (Continued in comment)
