Thank you to all the new followers who’ve shown an interest in my videos, it means a lot to me 🙏 with so many new faces, I thought it’s about time I do a proper introduction ✨

Although I post a lot about general pharmacy practice, my current job is far from your typical pharmacy career path. As an outreach pharmacist, I work out of shelters and treatment centres to see patients who may not have connected to the healthcare system in years. I also see patients who are struggling to find stability, and their health may be the last thing that’s on their priority list.
Being an outreach pharmacist allows me to meet people where they are, and provide the care that they need in the moment. It’s about rebuilding the trust they have in the healthcare system, and helping them realize they are just as deserving as everyone else to receive the care that they need.

After 4 years of being an outreach pharmacist, I am inspired every day by the hardworking nurses, doctors, caseworkers and social workers that need to jump over hurdles to provide the care you’d think anyone should be privileged to.

If this type of work speaks to you, I’d be forever grateful if you’d like to come along for the ride. It’s only recently dawned on me that I’ve gained a vast skillset in my 6 years of being a pharmacist. Many pharmacists may only do one or two, but I have the opportunity to practice and oversee four all at ONCE! 😅

My favourite time of the year 🥳🥳 make sure you book in advance, especially for seniors 65 and up, as many pharmacies are allocated only a select few of the high dose senior vaccines 💉

Two things many of us take for granted:

1. Having the means for transportation to and from health appointments
2. Having the capacity to get their independently

When people are already so sick and they don’t have the supports around them to help them get to the care they need, their health can deteriorate very quickly.

It’s easy to judge: “how did they let it get so bad?” “They are so lazy” “they have no self respect”

When in reality the resources we have to keep us healthy are a luxury for others.

Outreach is meant to help bridge this gap. To help those who don’t have the luxuries.

I’ve worked with the marginalized population in Alberta for over 4 years. Assisting with medication coverage is something I do on the daily.
However, each time I try to search online for the form, it is notoriously difficult to get the direct link (on purpose or not, one can only speculate 🧐 🌾 ).

Over the last month, I’ve needed to learn how to manage compounding operations. That means knowing where to source active pharmaceutical ingredients, researching master formulations, and using my pharmacist 🧠 on how to best create a formula if I can’t find one that already exists.

It hasn’t been easy.

Crash outs have been often.
Knowledge overload a daily occurrence.
Second guessing if I’m doing the right thing every single day.

I knew this wasn’t something I could get out of.
So instead I decided to go THROUGH it and give it my all.

Since starting on this journey, I have learned to appreciate how science 🧪 and artistry 🎨 seem to find a common space in pharmacy 💊
I still have lots to learn, but I am grateful to have this opportunity to grow my skills as a pharmacist 👩🏻‍⚕️

What I’ve learned:
1. Xenex MFRs > Medisca MFRs
2. @pccarx the mortar & pestle is a great podcast
3. Compounding CAN be fun 🤩

Pharmacy school taught me how to identify drug-related problems.

It didn’t teach me how to tell someone something they might not want to hear.

For a long time, I thought being a good pharmacist, manager, or employee meant being “nice.”

Don’t offend anyone. Don’t stir the pot. Don’t overstep.

But I’ve learned that avoiding a difficult conversation to protect someone’s feelings isn’t always kindness.

Sometimes the kindest thing you can do is give the constructive feedback.
Tell the patient why you’re concerned.
Tell leadership when a process isn’t working.

You can be respectful, empathetic AND direct.

If you genuinely want someone,or something,to improve, you have to be willing to create a little discomfort.

One of the most important lessons pharmacy school didn’t teach me:

Be kind. Not just nice.

This is a value that has shaped my actions everyday.
