Welcome to our new Practice Shift Series “5 things you may not know about ____” and this week it’s palliative care!

In my personal opinion this is one of the most underutilized subspecialties. It was also one of my favorite rotations as a resident.

If you’ve ever worked with anyone in this specialty you will see the way they approach patients and families at bedside is beyond amazing!

From the outpatient to the ICU they play such an instrumental role in our day to day.

So that’s why I’m kicking it off with them… what is palliative vs hospice and few other things you probably didn’t know!

I bet most people haven’t heard about this …Pharmacogenomics .. one of those things that sounds like “future medicine”… until you realize we’re already using it.

Imagine same medication, same dose but completely different response depending on the patient.

And now we’re starting to understand why and actually use that information to prescribe better.

This makes it more personal more precise.

To me is this a major Practice Shift.

So many people don’t realize that overdose isn’t just opioids.

Common medications can cause very real toxicity with no clear antidotes so with International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, let’s broaden the conversation.

One of our biggest fears is missing a stroke in a patient presenting with dizziness. And the tricky part? Some patients with acute dizziness are having a stroke … sometimes without an obvious focal neurologic deficit.

But sometimes, what you need most is a good history and a great bedside exam.

Let’s do some Sunday learning and break down dizziness in less than 4 minutes!

You asked for it, and here it is!

Managing alcohol use disorder doesn’t have to be complicated. These are some of the most common questions I get about treating AUD and ….I even added a Practice Shift flowchart for those of us who like to see it all laid out visually.

Hopefully this makes things a little easier the next time you’re sitting with a patient with AUD and thinking, “Okay…where do I start?”

Here it is! Part 4 of things I used to do as a physician that I no longer do.

These have honestly been some of the biggest practic shifts for me. And what surprised me most? A lot of physicians still haven’t made some of these changes yet.
