While water is a very good to picture how waves propagate in space and cross and combine with each other, it is important to keep in mind that the laws of physics are very different in soundwaves than in the waves that form on the water surface.

For example, big waves propagate faster than small ones on water while every wavelenght propagate at the same speed when talking about sound. by @phasisaudio
