Studio Ambre's Yakisugi Speakers reinterpret the traditional Japanese timber-charring technique through contemporary audio design. Crafted with Phasis Audio Systems, the solid oak speakers transform an ancient preservation method into sculptural objects where craftsmanship and acoustic engineering meet.

Solid oak is carefully machined before undergoing a controlled Yakisugi burn, creating a richly textured charred surface unique to every piece. The carbon layer is then stabilized to preserve its tactile character, allowing timber to shape both the visual identity and long-term durability of these high-fidelity speakers.

Studio Ambre’s (@studio_ambre) Yakisugi Sound System is intentionally set on fire before it’s finished.

Created in collaboration with Phasis Audio (@phasisaudio), each speaker begins as a solid oak enclosure before being exposed to open flames using the traditional Japanese Yakisugi technique. The controlled charring preserves the wood, enhances its durability, and creates a deeply textured surface, ensuring that no two speakers are exactly alike.

Because the burning process is inherently unpredictable, every piece carries the risk of being permanently damaged. To prevent the fire-altered exterior from affecting the acoustics, the audio components are housed inside a concealed aluminum chamber that remains isolated from the charred wooden shell.

Blending centuries-old craftsmanship with contemporary industrial design, the Yakisugi Sound System transforms a functional speaker into a sculptural object where fire becomes part of the manufacturing process rather than the final finish.

YAKISUGI SPEAKERS – sound object by @studio_ambre with @phasisaudio

The Yakisugi Speakers explore the intersection of material transformation and contemporary sound design. Inspired by the traditional Japanese Yakisugi technique, the wooden enclosures are charred through a controlled burning process that alters the surface both visually and structurally, revealing the depth and texture of the material.

Rather than redesigning the speaker itself, the project reframes a familiar object through material experimentation. The fragile carbonized surface is stabilized using a resin mixture developed through multiple prototypes, a crucial step that preserves the raw texture of the burnt wood while reinforcing its mechanical and structural integrity.

Studio Ambre’s design practice focuses on the relationship between time, material transformation, and perception, creating a constant tension between natural organic processes and precise technical engineering. The resulting project exists perfectly between design, craft, and fully functional audio equipment.

We unveiled our yakisugi speakers V2 in Milan, in collaboration with @phasisaudio. The week ended up being more than we could have hoped for.

So much gratitude for the people who stopped by, shared a moment, or simply took the time to listen. And to @deoron, thank you for opening the door and making all of this possible. 🤍

Away from conventional exhibition formats, @deoron takes over a former industrial space in Loreto and turns it into a hybrid environment, somewhere between exhibition, living space and collective experience.

Objects are not presented as isolated pieces. They are embedded within a larger spatial composition, designed to be explored, used and inhabited.

At the center, a sculptural sound system structures the entire space. Sound is not background, it shapes perception, connects elements and guides movement.

Visitors move freely, with no imposed path. The focus shifts from image to experience.

The initial intention was to experience the striking installation by @new_fidelity_ @yontstudio
It also became an opportunity to step outside the traditional boundaries of HIFI and discover how other designers approach audio objects through their own vision.

In a Design Week often driven by visual impact, DEORON offers a more direct and sensory approach, where design unfolds through time and use.
