Three Legs and a Spare

When Davy, a 3-year-old Black Lab and upland guide dog, got tangled in wire and broke his leg, his owner faced a tough choice: surgery or amputation. Advice from fellow bird-dog folks changed his outlook: "Dogs are born with three legs and a spare."

Davy had the amputation, and just five months later he was guiding a full season across multiple states. He even beat his littermate to a retrieve on a running rooster. Now he's got more to prove than ever, and he's proving it.

Here’s to the cackle, the flush, and the long walk back to the truck.

Where are you hunting this fall? If you’re in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Michigan or Oklahoma, keep an eye out for these signs! The Public Access to Habitat (PATH) program has opened over 240,000 acres of private land to public access since 2024. If you see the orange sign, turn the dogs loose!

The pheasant capital pioneered the PATH concept with programs like the Aberdeen Pheasant Coalition. PATH took that concept statewide, and has now created nearly 80,000 acres of new public access on private lands.

The Nebraska Community Access Partnership (NCAP) is the Husker’s version of PATH. It’s focused on prime pheasant habitat in southwest Nebraska, with plans to expand in the years to come.

Oklahoma is PATH’s first foray into true bobwhite habitat. Working alongside the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s Oklahoma Land Access Program (OLAP), nearly 10,000 acres of new public access has been created.

With a focus on creating new habitat as well as public access, North Dakota PATH incentivizes the establishment of new, high-quality grasslands which are simultaneously enrolled in the North Dakota Game and Fish Department’s Private Lands Open to Sportsman (PLOTS) program.

Michigan has a long history of providing excellent pheasant hunting opportunities, and PATH is now expanding those opportunities in the southern third of the state. by @pheasants_forever
