This is a noteworthy milestone in our @nyswritersinstitute history that I wanted to share. This month marks the 40th anniversary that Suzanne Roberson, Writers Institute research assistant and archivist, has worked directly with Bill Kennedy, our founder & executive director, as indispensable researcher on his novels, plays, film scripts, essays and all his writing projects. They are at work once more this weekend, as Bill, at 98, continues to chip away at an ambitious, deeply researched historical novel that fuses three centuries of Albany history with his own lived experience. Suzanne and Bill are simpatico in understanding what it takes to reconstitute historical fact into great literature of the imagination. Hooray to you both. Here’s to your ongoing work as you finish organizing Bill’s archives. Thanks to Bill’s son-in-law Phil Caruso for the pix. @phil.caruso @kathy.caruso.35 @vincentkcaruso @brendanckennedy @beuttlerbill @libraryofamerica @tom_junod @gregorymaguire @mhuberny @ualbanylibraries by @phil.caruso

I could have spoken with my latest guest Phil Caruso for many hours. Throughout his decades long career as a movie and TV still photographer he has made phenomenal images that have become iconic movie posters as well as for general film promotions. We discussed his start in the business and what’s become a three generation passion now with his son, the talented @vincentkcaruso. Join me for this engaging episode and you’ll get a real sense of how Phil’s passion and talent have made him the go-to photographer for luminaries such as Martin Scorsese, Robert DeNiro, Ron Howard and many more. #philcaruso #movieposter #stillphotography #mitchstringerimages by @phil.caruso

We joined renowned film & TV set photographer Phil Caruso for a black & white photo walk through Downtown Albany and got to learn directly from him! After the walk, McGreevy ProLab & ProPress gave us a behind-the-scenes tour of their incredible lab while our rolls of film were processed (yes, free film + developing!). Seeing those images come to life reminded us why we fell in love with photography in the first place. ✨ If you missed it, keep an eye out for more events like this, you’ll want to be there next time. by @phil.caruso
1/2: Thank you to everyone who showed up and participated in our first ever photo walk! It was truly a great time, and we hope we can sponsor community photography events like this in the future. An event like this was possible because of our film processing happening in-house. Participants were led by Phil Caruso and his son Vincent Caruso to shoot rolls of Ilford HP5 around beautiful downtown Albany. After their walk, the film was brought back to McGreevy ProLab for processing. It takes about an hour to process, and then after a few random roll were selected for review and critique. So many amazing photos were captured. The scope of talent and varied perspective in the Albany area runs deep, and it show here! This is the first round of images we’re sharing from this event, with more coming next week.
