Today, 27 days before Election Day, the Republican majority suddenly decided that fuel costs are an emergency.

I voted today to suspend North Carolina’s gas tax through the end of November. Families are hurting from this disastrous war and failing economic policies, and I’ll support real relief wherever we can deliver it.

But if affordability is serious enough to call a special session less than a month before voters go to the polls, why stop at the gas pump?

We asked to talk about grocery prices. Utility bills. Other ways to put money back in people’s pockets *now*.

Republicans wouldn’t even let us discuss it.

I’m glad we gave people some relief today. But 41¢ at the pump for a few weeks won't solve a cost-of-living crisis that families have been dealing with for months.

North Carolinians deserve a legislature that fights to make life more affordable all year long — not just when Election Day is around the corner. #ncpol taken in Raleigh, North Carolina by @phil_rubin

“Cheap government” gets expensive when you’re the one paying the price.

When a school’s broken HVAC system means a parent misses work, the cost doesn’t disappear. It lands on a family. When communities can’t afford to hire the police officers they need, families pay a price in safety, too.

We deserve strong public schools, safe and thriving communities, and a tax system where everyone pays their fair share—including the wealthiest.

Watch why I’m asking you to vote AGAINST North Carolina’s income tax cap amendment this November. It won’t lower your taxes—and it would make it harder to ask the wealthiest to contribute more to the communities we all depend on.

Please share this with someone who’s weighing their vote! #ncpol taken in Raleigh, North Carolina by @phil_rubin

Your bills were an emergency before their reelection was.

Republican leaders suddenly want a special session on fuel costs—but just days ago, they didn’t bother to schedule a single vote even though we were scheduled to be in session.

Families deserve leaders who feel the urgency every day, not just when an election is coming.

We need a very different General Assembly. And come January 1, we’re going to have one.

🗳️ Early voting starts October 15. Check your registration, make a plan, and bring a friend. Let’s turn out so we can throw them out.

A vote for a property tax cap sounds good... until you understand the fine print that’s not on your ballot.

Rep. @phil_rubin explains what voters need to know about this proposed constitutional amendment, including one example from the North Carolina Housing Coalition: Under a possible 2% cap, the average taxpayer could save only $7 a month, while North Carolina communities could lose nearly $1 billion each year for schools, roads, police, and fire departments.

Meanwhile, massive corporations like Duke Energy stand to benefit MUCH more than working families.

We need real property tax reform, not a vaguely worded amendment that threatens essential services while delivering the biggest benefits to the biggest companies. taken in Raleigh, North Carolina by @phil_rubin

I chose to sit outside in this heat. Our kids shouldn’t have to learn in it.

When I visited Lynn Road Elementary this week, some classrooms were nearly 80 degrees due to HVAC issues. Teachers and staff were working hard to keep kids focused and learning.

Our educators are delivering. Wake just reported its highest academic proficiency since 2012.

They deserve buildings that work, too.

Last school year, Wake has to budget more than $156 MILLION in local salary supplements alone to keep pay competitive in our state, which has the worst state education funding IN THE NATION.

Making educator pay competitive puts enormous pressure on the same local budgets we depend on to maintain schools--all while the State fails its legal duty to fund the personnel itself.

Funding instruction should mean funding salaries that actually keep educators in classrooms, not pushing the cost of those salaries down to local government. The General Assembly needs to meet its responsibility.

Great teachers and working air conditioning should never be competing priorities.
