Reposted • @ioneandmann Ahead of the opening of ADVANCED CONTEMPORARIES II next Saturday we are excited to introduce Phil Illingworth ✨

Phil defines his practice as experimental, through the repeated testing-out of hypotheses in the studio, and exploring the boundaries between two and three dimensions is a core element of his practice. He has exhibited in the UK, the USA, China, and in Europe including the 53rd Venice Biennale, with solo exhibitions at Platform A Gallery, Middlesbrough; WW Gallery, London; and Art Space Portsmouth. His works have been selected for the John Moores Painting Prize, the Marmite Prize IV, and the Jerwood Drawing Prize. Notable public collections include the Yale Center for British Art and the Priseman Seabrook Collection.
Phil is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors and a member and committee member of Contemporary British Painting.

🟡 JOIN US next Saturday 26 July from 1-5 pm to discover the work of Phil Illingworth as part of ADVANCED CONTEMPORARIES II, curated in collaboration with Paul Carey Kent 🟣

This year’s edition brings together six artists whose work challenges conventions of representation to reach meaningfully simple results - enriched by their conversation with art history as well as life experience.

Advanced Contemporaries was conceived by Paul Carey-Kent to highlight and celebrate artists whose practices, spanning decades, are deserving of attention now, making this a counterpoint to the art world’s fixation on youth and ‘newness’.

We are thrilled to welcome this group of incredible artists whose rare achievement of long-term commitment, belief and quiet dedication marks them as Advanced Contemporaries:

John Peter Askew
Phil Illingworth
Maria Lalić
Jonathan Parsons
Michael Samuels
Michael Stubbs

Juggernaut
A solo show featuring the work of artist Phil Illingworth

Preview evening 3rd of July, 6pm - 8pm at Platform A Gallery. Refreshments provided.

In an era of political unease, artist Phil Illingworth brings together works from across fifteen years of making as well as never-before-seen work into an exhibition that demonstrates an increasing sense of helplessness when confronted with the political and social forces shaping our lives.

Amazing venue and installation for ‘Weft’, an 18th Century barn in the grounds of St Paul’s Waldenbury, the former home of the Queen Mother.

Weft is an exhibition of works by David Johnson, Emma Louise Dickson, Simon Croft, Harri Harrison, Phil Illingworth and Xavier White.

All the works in this exhibition are audio-described. Anna McNay, curator, said: ‘When putting together this exhibition I was driven primarily by the search for good quality art, but it is amazing how many artists and works turned out to have embedded stories of adversity or disability. I hope this experiential exhibition will provide insight into the quotidian of so many people.’

The Barn, St Paul’s Walden Bury, Hitchin, Hertfordshire SG4 8BP
Exhibition dates: 9 - 16 May 2026
Opening times: 10am - 4pm daily

Weft is an art installation and exhibition that explores and centres disability access, inclusively and diversity.

It will be held in the beautifully restored 18th century barn at St Paul's Walden Bury.

The installation will feature web-like screens that disrupt movement through the barn and give expression to the blind experience of being in enclosed space and the built environment.

Other artworks in the space build on the themes of the disrupted, disabled experience, an integrated sensorimotor and the fragility of life we take for granted.
