So you good mate from down the street returns after a hiking trip to the UK with a 1981 copy of the NME as s gift for me.
Not only is my band No 1 on the singles chart and 12 on the indie albums chart, we had a gig advertised for that Friday.
Exciting times for a bunch of 23 year olds from Australia….. mind you , we really believed we had it going on and that most of the other bands didn’t. by @phill_calvert

There’s something about being in Amalfi with Julia. Every time I take the same photo of her on a balcony, I do bombs and float in the Mediterranean. We rumble around the back alleys and passageways. We drink a few cocktails and love each other. It’s a little over cooked with tourist thing these days ( a bit rich that coming from a tourist!!!) but it is still a magical place for me and for us both. I hope we can make it back again 🤞 by @phill_calvert

How you know you are in Europe. The cap never separates from the bottle. Less loose plastic in the sea and in general. How long will it take for Australia to adopt this? The EU countries seem much more dedicated to sorting and minimising their rubbish, especially in public places and in nature. by @phill_calvert

After my last post on renovation and building tips, I thought it only fair that I make it up to all my musician friends with a more entertaining post. When in Stockholm always visit Hellstone. It’s one of the best music stores in the world, especially if you are a Ludwig junkie like me. Sven is a legend and you cannot believe the gear he has. And for all you drummers….. if you think there is a snare you are looking for, but will never find. Trust me….. it will be at Hellstone. And if it isn’t Sven will get it for you. ……And yes. Decided I’d do a little entertaining of my own. Julia posts such entertaining insights into our travels that it is hard for me to know where to start.

Here’s one for all of my mates in the trades. Anyone who ever built, renovated, designed or dreamt of doing just that.
The Scandinavian and Nordic countries have their own set of rules. The specs on insulation and drainage are off the charts.
I’ve seen a little bit of “standing seam” done with colourbond and I’ve even seen some fancy houses in Noosa and Toorak with copper(gasp…imagine the cost) …. But here. Just day to day stuff.

But then add in giant down pipes (no pvc here) to cope with rain and snow melt. Bracing ledges on the edges of the rooftops so that sheets of hard snow don’t slide off……and then my favourite…..Heating elements in the gutters and down pipes so that they don’t freeze solid.
They really have had to make these cities work.
Double glazing just standard!! But usually double glazing inside the existing old school double glazing……plus 2 layers of curtains.

I could go on. I couldn’t cope with the winters here. Not so much the cold but the lack of light. No wonder they are into a lot of craft. Also easier to get good at your instrument if trapped indoors for 20 hrs of darkness. I also now really get the vodka.

Malmo tonight. Copenhagen over the bridge in a day or so. Italy beckons. Open windows and warm breezes. Sitting with my feet in the Mediterranean and a wine in my hand. That will be a different vibe. Still we have lived our time here. But if I ever build again, I’ll be taking some inspiration from the tradies of the Nordic zones. taken in Helsinki by @phill_calvert

10pm. Bed time in Helsinki. Still an hour to go until sunset ……..and sunrise at 4.45 am. A lot of walking today. I don’t envy the Finn’s their winter with minus 20 c and 2-4 hours of daylight. No wonder mid summer is their biggest celebration of the year. Loving what we are learning about the history and culture of this crazy city by @phill_calvert

You have THREE days left to dive into our Obscuratorium before it closes, please join us for a glass of prosecco at the Finissage on the last day. Sunday 4th May, 12pm to 4pm, in the Gallery at Gasworks Arts Park, 21 Graham Street, Albert Park. Enter through the metal leaf gate and past the cafe into the main building. For those who have purchased, you may pick up your artworks from 3.30pm. Bring with you something obscure......Kitty Calvert’s next project is a large interactive steel sculpture in the shape of a stack of vintage books in red and gold, to be installed in Gasworks Arts Park towards the end of May. We would love it if you would bring something unique (smaller than a wine bottle) to the Finissage, which will be interred under the sculpture at the time of installation. Please put your name on the piece, or you may wish to write something, we trust the treasure trove will be uncovered and pondered upon at sometime waaay in the future. #kittycalvert #robertearp #finissage #obscuratorium #artmelbourne taken in Gasworks Creative Precinct by @phill_calvert
