A wonderful night @royalcourtliv for the cast and crew screening of the Red Or Dead film that we captured live last year. So great to see @george95jones @olliemawdsley and so many of the community cast that made this experience so special. Tears and laughter in abundance. Film to be out in the world before long. Watch this space.

This Saturday, my production of King Lear, that I directed in Tokyo in October ‘25 starring @shinobu717_official and @riemiyazawa0406_official will be screened @kings_college_london as part of a symposium on the art of translation between English and Japanese.

I will be doing a bi-lingual panel discussion before hand with Yoko Tokita (interpreter and award winning theatre translator), Kiuchi Hiromasu (King Lear Translator with me), and well as an actor’s insight from Katsumuura Masanobu (The Fool in this production).

It’s a subject very close to my heart, working on the translation of this play was one of the highlights of my working life. And it’s a production I’m really proud of.

Yoichi Uchida in The Nikkei Shinbun said it was “A thrilling theatrical experience in which Shakespeare’s masterpiece reveals an entirely new face…”

今週土曜日、キングス・カレッジ・ロンドンにて、英語と日本語の翻訳に関するシンポジウムの一環として、私が演出を手がけ、2025年10月に東京で上演した『リア王』が上映されます。主演は、@shinobu717_official と @riemiyazawa0406_official です。

上映に先立ち、通訳・受賞歴のある演劇翻訳家の時田陽子さん、私と共に『リア王』の翻訳を担当した木内弘益さん、そして本作で道化役を演じた勝村正信さんによる俳優としての見解を交えた、バイリンガル・パネルディスカッションを行います。

この作品の翻訳は私にとって非常に思い入れのあるテーマであり、これまでのキャリアの中でも特に印象深い出来事の一つです。そして、この作品を心から誇りに思っています。

日経新聞の内田洋一氏は、「シェイクスピアの傑作が全く新しい一面を見せる、スリリングな演劇体験…」と評しました。

Des. Des. Des. When I arrived in Chicago in February to direct Merry Wives again, I was so happy to be able to tell you how great you were and how much I love you. And I will cherish the text you sent back. I’ll cherish it forever now you’ve passed. You were the reason I have a life and career in the theatre. When I was 14 I didn’t think it was possible for anyone to be as funny as you were in Ian Judge’s 12th Night at Stratford. The whole thing seemed impossibly exciting. You were the master as far as I was concerned. Then you were attached as Falstaff to the RSC Merry Wives in 2012 and I was proposed as director, we met for tea, my hero, and you said yes. And what a laugh we had. What a genius you were in that production, put on earth by a benevolent deity for that role. (And you even managed to disappear when the other show was in Rep to direct the panto at Sheringham…). To call you a friend is a great privilege. You meant the bloody world to me Dessie. I’m heartbroken. A stage star. One who was stage struck. Amazingly, Im now going in to tech for Merry Wives in Chicago this morning. It’s going to be tough. But I know what you’d say. And we will. We’ll get it on. Rest in peace Dessie. And thank you.

@richardshephardmusicfoundation is a wonderful charity that I have the privilege of being a patron of and also a founding trustee. It was set up in the memory of our dear friend the great composer and educator Dr Richard Shephard. Today marks the anniversary of his passing. Some of the happiest moments of my life were spent in “Sir” Richard’s attic in York while we made the 2016 York Mystery Plays in the Minster. What a laugh we had. I miss him of course, and I know that he would be very impressed by the extraordinary work done by the whole team at the charity that bears his name. The number of young lives that have been changed in Yorkshire and further afield by being given access to music, instruments and music tuition is very considerable. If you want to make a difference PLEASE consider making a donation to this amazing charity. It’s doing great work, in remembrance of a the life and work of a wonderful man.
