THEMES IN TEXTURE | ISSUE 06
Inheritance & Impressions
Pub Day: December 14th 2026

What do we carry forward?
What leaves a mark?

At PHIL LIT, our themes are drawn directly from our cover art, created by human artists whose work inspires each issue's unique reading experience.

Our themes offer a point of entry into the connections, contrasts, and surprising conversations that emerge among poetry, prose, and art.

However, they are not prescribed subjects for submissions and are intentionally left open to interpretation.

Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis and remain open through November 13 OR whenever we reach our cap.

Each back issue is its own curated literary experience, where individual works take on new dimensions when read in conversation with one another. by @phillitjournal

What makes a poem stand out to our editors?

When reading poetry submissions, certain craft choices make us lean in. Here are a few qualities that catch our attention at PHIL LIT Journal.

1. Titles With Jobs
A title is a poem's first impression. We like to see it do some work.

2. Intriguing Openings
Grounded lines that invite us in and make us want to keep reading.

3. Specific Imagery as Entry
Especially details particular to the speaker.

4. Defamiliarization
Astute and surprising diction or language that refreshes a familiar image, perspective, or subject.

5. Formal Engagement
Traditional forms yes! But even in free verse, we want intentional lineation, rhythm, and effective voltas (purposeful hinges or shifts that deepen or complicate meaning.)

6. Endings That Land
Purposeful endings that resonate beyond the final line.

7. Restraint
Earned emotion without over-explaining or forcing a tidy resolution, or leaning into sentimentality.

8. What Is the Poem Achieving?
At PHIL LIT, we don't shy away from darkness, but we are more interested in what a poem illuminates within it.

With that said, Poetry isn't a checklist. These aren't requirements or a formula for publication. We love poems that challenge our expectations!

Ultimately, we're interested in how deliberately a poem engages its craft and what it leaves with the reader.

What makes YOU keep reading? Tell us below!

WHAT WE’RE READING: FALL 2026 edn.

A little look at what the PHIL LIT editorial team read while we compiled our Fall issue — in addition to reading all of your impressive submissions of course.

Somehow, we managed not to report any nonfiction. Although, our Prose Editor Farris did note that she's been reading her students’ essays, so we’re counting that as our collective attempt.

Swipe through to see what’s been on our nightstands the last few months, and let us know what you've been reading lately? Nonfiction suggestions are especially welcome. 👀 by @phillitjournal

Hi Friends!

General submissions for the Winter Issue are filling quickly (a little quicker than anticipated actually).

Both Poetry and Prose are already more than halfway to their submission caps, which means submissions may close before our posted November 13 deadline if we reach capacity.

So if you’ve been meaning to send us your work, consider this your teeny pink balloon-animal sign to do so.

General submissions are always free to enter. Submit through the link in our bio.

Oh, and we also have an active Poetry Contest running until Dec 1st. by @phillitjournal

Our 2027 Best American Essays nominations are here.

Each year, The Best American Essays considers work published in North American periodicals (writers can be from anywhere) for inclusion in its annual anthology.

We are incredibly proud to send these pieces forward for consideration:
In the Trenches, Kate Ingersoll-Mezgares
@kateingersoll66

ABC’s of Ambivalence, Kayla Gray

Scrabbling the Air, Rebecca D. Martin
@mrsmartinreadsbooks

People Tell Me They Dissociate, MaryGrace King @marygrace.writes

Congratulations (and good luck!) to Kate, Kayla, Rebecca, and MaryGrace. We are glad these pieces found a home with us and proud to send them forward.

We’ve reached #1 in PHIL LIT’s editors’ most voted participating literary magazine of #LitMagWeek2026:

And it's a TIE for #1 — @adroitjournal + @poetryfoundation

These are two very different publications, but both represent something our editors keep returning to: publications can have a strong identity without becoming static.

The Adroit Journal pairs exceptional craft with adventurous work and emerging voices, while also investing meaningfully in writers through mentorship, prizes, criticism, and literary development. It feels less like a single publication and more like a literary ecosystem; something we also strive towards.

And POETRY proves that more than a century of history doesn’t have to result in a fixed definition of what a poem should be. It continues to make room for varied styles from established and emerging poets.

Swipe through for what they publish and why PHIL LIT’s editors love them.

Also don't forget, to take $5 off the Paragon2026 Poetry Anthology all LitMagWeek. (linked) by @phillitjournal

It's day two of posting our fav participating LitMags, a countdown:

#3 — @blreview

#2 — a tie! @wildroofjournal and @hfrlitmag

Bellevue Literary Review: grew out of a medical setting and uses literature to explore health, illness, healing, and vulnerability.

Wild Roof Journal creates space for work at the intersection of nature, human society, consciousness, and experimentation.

Hayden’s Ferry Review, a university press, edited by students at Arizona State University, brings an ever-evolving editorial perspective to poetry, prose, translation, and art.

That range is one of our favorite things about independent literary publishing: there is no single way to make a literary magazine.

Swipe through for what they publish and why PHIL LIT’s editors love them.

Take $5 our annual poetry anthology, Paragon 2026 until Oct 3rd. (linked in bio)

LIT MAG WEEK begins!

We’re kicking it off by counting down the lit mags the PHIL LIT team voted as the ones they loved reading the most this year, from among the journals participating in LitMagWeek2026.

We’re starting with two ties:

#5 — @chestnutreview and @the__rebis

#4 — @_kitchentablequarterly and @newenglandreview

These four publications are pleasantly different from one another—which is part of what we love about literary magazines in the first place. Each publication has built a distinct editorial identity and made room for work we want to keep reading.

Swipe through for what they publish and why PHIL LIT’s editors love them. Tomorrow, we'll reveal #3 + #2.

And because it’s LitMagWeek, PHIL LIT PARAGON Poetry Anthology is $12 all week. (Linked in bio.)
