Nietzsche did not simply write philosophy; he entered peopleโ€™s inner rooms without permission. For many, reading him feels like losing a God, a father, or the last structure that protected them from chaos. I meet people in my clinic who feel that something in them was destroyed after encountering his books, not because Nietzsche gave them despair, but because he removed the illusions that once made life feel safe. And yet, sometimes this destruction is not the end. Sometimes it is the beginning of a more honest life, where therapy begins exactly where certainty collapses.

The underground man wasn't broken. He was too aware. Dostoevsky saw this coming lone before therapy language, overthinking and self-analysis become everyday habits. Insight without courage doesn't free you. It FREEZES you.

What do you do when the thing that held everything together is gone?

Most people quote โ€œGod is deadโ€ as a victory line. Nietzsche didnโ€™t write it that way. In The Gay Science, the words belong to a madman who runs into the marketplace in the bright morning carrying a lit lantern, crying that he is looking for God. The people laughing at him are not believers. They are the ones who already stopped believing, and they find him amusing. He is the only one who understands what has happened. If God was the ground under our values, our sense of right and wrong, our reason to get up in the morning, then losing him is not a relief. It is a loss no one is mourning. At the end, the madman throws his lantern to the ground and says he has come too early. The event is still on its way to them.

We do this in smaller ways all the time. A marriage ends, a faith fades, a career we built ourselves around stops making sense, and we call it freedom before we have grieved it. Maybe that is what Nietzsche saw. You cannot build new meaning on a loss you refuse to feel.

What do you do with the moment after youโ€™ve failed again?

Most people remember Sisyphus for the boulder. Camus didnโ€™t. In The Myth of Sisyphus he says the part that interests him is the walk back down, when the rock has rolled to the bottom and Sisyphus follows it with empty hands. He calls it the hour of consciousness. Nothing is being pushed, nothing is being achieved, and for that reason it is the only moment Sisyphus fully sees his situation. That is where his freedom lives, not in the effort, but in how he walks back to it. We spend our lives trying to get the boulder to the top. Maybe the real question was always how we come down.
