YOUR HANDS CAN RESTART A HEART

October 16, 2026 is World Restart a Heart Day.

Cardiac arrest can strike anyone, anywhere, at any time: at home, at work, in school, or on the street. When the heart stops, every second counts. Someone who knows CPR and starts it right away can be the difference between life and death while help is on the way.

That's why the Philippine Red Cross keeps training Filipinos in CPR, from students and volunteers to security guards and communities across the country. Because saving a life shouldn't depend on luck. It should depend on people who are ready.

Remember the basics:

• Check the scene and the person.
• Call for help. Dial 143 .
• Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
• Use an AED if one is available.

Huwag matakot tumulong. Ang iyong mga kamay ay maaaring magbigay ng pangalawang buhay.

Want to learn CPR? Enroll in a Philippine Red Cross First Aid and BLS training. E-mail or Call safetytraining@redcross.org.ph 09178068520

BE A HANDWASHING HERO! 🧼🙌

Today is Global Handwashing Day! Washing your hands with soap is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to prevent disease.

In 2026, the Philippine Red Cross reached 72,706 individuals through hygiene promotion, including proper handwashing. Of these, 46,717 were reached during emergency operations and 25,989 through preparedness and school initiatives.

"Sabon, tubig, at disiplina lang. Clean hands stop disease before it starts," said PRC Chairman and CEO Richard "Dick" Gordon.

Wet. Lather. Scrub for 20 seconds. Rinse. Dry.

Make handwashing a daily habit, because clean hands save lives. ❤️

🏠 𝘙𝘌𝘚𝘐𝘓𝘐𝘌𝘕𝘊𝘌 𝘚𝘛𝘈𝘙𝘛𝘚 𝘈𝘛 𝘏𝘖𝘔𝘌 🛡️❤️

Today, October 13, we observe the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR), a reminder that reducing disaster risks begins with the choices we make and the actions we take every day.

This year’s global theme, “Resilience Starts at Home,” highlights the importance of safer homes and prepared households in building disaster-resilient communities.

In the Philippines, the theme “Panatag na Tahanan at Paaralan,” under the Panatag Pilipinas 3.0 campaign, emphasizes the vital role of families and schools in strengthening disaster preparedness and resilience.

Disaster preparedness begins with knowing the risks we face and taking action before disasters strike. The Philippine Red Cross encourages everyone to follow the 𝟰𝗣𝘀 of disaster preparedness:

🔎 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗖𝗧– Know the hazards in your community, monitor official weather advisories and early warnings, and identify who may need assistance during an emergency.

📝 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗡 – Create a family emergency plan. Identify evacuation routes and meeting points, establish emergency contacts, and agree on what to do when separated.

🎒 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗘 – Keep an emergency go-bag ready, secure heavy furniture, check potential hazards in your home, and learn basic first aid and life-saving skills.

🏃 𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗘 – Conduct family emergency drills, participate in school earthquake and fire drills, practice evacuation procedures, and review your emergency plan regularly.

Resilience starts at home, but it grows through collective action. This International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, let us Predict, Plan, Prepare, and Practice to build safer homes, prepared schools, and resilient communities.

Ang ligtas na tahanan at paaralan ay simula ng isang matatag na komunidad. Maging handa, maging panatag!

The Philippine Red Cross remains committed to working with communities to strengthen disaster preparedness, reduce risks, and save lives.

📞 For emergencies, call 143.

Today, October 10, is World Mental Health Day.

Behind every disaster, emergency, and hardship are people carrying invisible wounds: grief, fear, anxiety, and stress that don't always show. At the Philippine Red Cross, we believe healing starts when someone truly listens.

Through Psychological First Aid and psychosocial support, our trained staff and volunteers stand beside survivors, families, and even fellow responders. They create safe spaces where every story is heard, every feeling matters, and no one has to face their struggles alone.

"Mental health is not a luxury; it is part of saving lives. A disaster may destroy homes, but it must never be allowed to break the human spirit. The Red Cross will always be there to help people heal, inside and out," said PRC Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon.

"When we listen to lived experiences, we don't just hear stories; we find the path to real change. Every voice matters in building communities that are not only safe, but also whole," said PRC Secretary General Dr. Gwendolyn Pang.

Today we thank teachers around the world for helping shape the humanitarian leaders of today and tomorrow.

The Philippine Red Cross proudly recognizes the invaluable role teachers play in shaping young minds and hearts, and the support they need to thrive in their important work.

"Teachers are the unsung heroes of our society, guiding our youth and instilling in them the values of compassion and service. At the Red Cross, we are honored to work alongside dedicated educators throughout the Philippines, both in high schools and universities, who inspire students to embrace humanitarian principles. Many of them generously volunteer as advisers and leaders in our Red Cross Youth Program, helping to foster a spirit of giving and leadership in our future generations," - PRC Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon.

To every teacher and Red Cross Youth adviser: maraming salamat po for teaching not just lessons, but humanity.
