Joint Statement – November 2, 2026 Representatives of the Phoenix Symphony’s Board of Directors, Staff, and Local 586, American Federation of Musicians met today for a respectful, constructive conversation about the Symphony’s future. All participants left the meeting encouraged by the progress made toward our shared goal of returning the orchestra to the stage. The central items discussed included the meaningful fundraising progress made over the past week and a plan to resume performances, possibly as soon as this month. We also agreed that the Symphony Musicians, Board, and Staff will collaborate on fundraising to support the Symphony. We appreciate the spirit of cooperation reflected in today’s critical discussion. Continued dialogue and community support will be essential as we work together to bring live symphonic music back to our audiences and community. by @phoenixsymphony

In response to learning the Phoenix Symphony’s concerts are suspended until further notice: Phoenix is an extraordinary community, who cares deeply about their city and believe in the role music can play in shaping its future. Two weeks ago, I had a truly special time with them. Beyond their inspiring commitment to music-making, I was deeply moved by the spirit of purpose and possibility that runs through everything they do to connect with their city and the community. This harmony that the orchestra creates has the potential to reach far beyond the stage. Through projects that bring music into schools, neighborhoods, and communities, the Phoenix Symphony reminds us that music has the power to reach people where they are, create a sense of belonging, and touch lives in ways that words alone sometimes cannot. For me, harmony comes from building bridges. Bridges inherently connect people and communities. Art does exactly the same: open doors, bring us closer together, and transform the way we see ourselves and each another. Its impact is not defined by the walls of a venue, but by the connections it creates and the lives it touches. More importantly, the arts give us hope. In many ways, the orchestra is the perfect metaphor for the relationship between the individual and society. As a conductor, I am directing the ensemble, and yet I am the only one who doesn’t actually produce any sound. I can share ideas and communicate a vision to musicians, but I am nothing without them. The performing arts are at a pivotal moment. We face persistent cuts to arts education, profound changes in audiences and funding, an ever-shifting cultural landscape, and widespread exhaustion. The Phoenix Symphony is no exception. In the face of these challenges, it is vital for all of us who work in the arts to hold on to hope and remind ourselves that what we do matters. Music is not merely entertainment - it touches souls and provides comfort as much as in moments of joy but also in moments of grief. It helps us understand who we are and how we connect to the wider world, imagine what we might become together. And in this spirit, we hope to create what we will become together. by @phoenixsymphony
With heavy hearts, we share that The Phoenix Symphony will suspend its 2026–27 performances and programs following our November 1, 2026, performance due to longstanding financial challenges. This is an incredibly difficult moment for our Symphony family and the community we have been honored to serve for nearly 80 years. Our hearts are especially with our extraordinary musicians, dedicated staff, and their families, whose passion, artistry, and unwavering commitment have brought music to life for generations. This decision is in no way a reflection of their talent, dedication, or the remarkable work they continue to do. To our patrons, supporters, and the greater Phoenix community, thank you for being part of our story. This is your Symphony, and we remain committed to doing everything possible to preserve its future. We encourage you to read our full statement and important updates at the link in our bio. Thank you for standing with The Phoenix Symphony and the people who make the music possible. 💙 by @phoenixsymphony
What an unforgettable first week as Music Director Designate of The Phoenix Symphony! From the very first moment, I felt an extraordinary sense of warmth and welcome. What a joy and an honor to become part of this remarkable family of inspiring musicians! My heartfelt gratitude extends to everyone behind the scenes: our wonderful staff, Peter Kjome, Mo Stein, and the entire Board for their trust, support, and belief in what we can build together. A special joy to share the stage with the extraordinary Olga Kern in an unforgettable Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concerto. And to our wonderful, enthusiastic audience: thank you for making this so special! This is only the beginning. So much to dream, discover, and create together. “Why not?” Let’s make that our motto!
