I had the privilege along with my group to witness this epic moment when the Central American Tapir(Tapirus bairdii) decided to show up in the beach for his weekly skin therapy session provided by 2 very active Yellow-headed Caracara(Daptrius chimachima). What a surprise for my clients to approach this unique inter specific interaction in the most bio diverse place in the planet, the Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park.

Antbirds | 20 sec encounter 🐜🪶

One of those encounters that simply makes me happy. 🥹

During a birding tour with @tranquilobay , we came across an army ant swarm near a river, and following all the action were Bicolored, Ocellated, and Zeledon’s Antbirds. I think @moonman04 and I got a little too excited 😂, but it was one of those moments when so much is happening at once that you don’t even know where to look.

And in the middle of all that excitement, an Ocellated Antbird showed up, a lifer for both of us 💯. I always thought my first one would be P. m. mcleannani somewhere in central Panama, but instead, my lifer ended up being P. m. saturatus in Bocas del Toro. 🤭

Something I found even more interesting afterward was realizing that all three we saw represented subspecies found in this region of western Panama. These antbirds also have an incredible relationship with army ants, following their swarms and taking advantage of small prey flushed from the leaf litter as the ants move through. 🐜

And all of this was happening practically right along the roadside, near a river. Just one of those days in the field that you enjoy a little more than usual.
