Thank you, @kahnsantoridavison for the @metrotimes feature! There were so many news angles that came out of the 7th annual @blackfootwearforum at @plcdetroit!

“The Kaepernick and Hill conversation was preceded by a talk between fashion designer @iamaprilwalker and Detroit native fashion designer @mauricemalone. Malone talked about his journey becoming Detroit’s most notable streetwear designer and also a promoter of 90s Detroit hip-hop.”

Thank you, @urbanmagazine, for featuring this powerful conversation with Colin Kaepernick and Jemele Hill at @plcdetroit during the @blackfootwearforum.

“…the discussion also offered another way to think about being “Rooted in commUNITY”: Sometimes community is about who stands with you. Sometimes it is about who you choose to stand for.”

At @plcdetroit during the seventh annual National @blackfootwearforum, @WWD writer Jaden Thompson sat down with cultural architect, entrepreneur, educator and author @iamaprilwalker—the first woman to help shape what is now a more than $371 billion global streetwear industry.

They discussed Walker’s forthcoming book, ownership and her journey building a business as a Black woman. Walker was also honored with the BFF Trailblazer Award!

Fun fact: In 2025, Pensole Lewis College of Business & Design (PLC Detroit) honored Walker with the April Walker Apparel Design STU/DEO in her honor.

⭐️ The annual National Black Footwear Forum is presented by Pensole Lewis College of Business & Design and the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (@fdra1944).

THANK YOU, @fox2detroit for your support.
The seventh annual National @blackfootwearforum (BFF) presented by Pensole Lewis College of Business and Design (@plcdetroit) and @fdra1944 Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA) concluded its four-day gathering in Detroit, Michigan at PLC Detroit, bringing together footwear professionals, designers, students, creatives, executives, cultural leaders, activists and celebrities.

This year’s theme, “ROOTED in commUNITY,” resonated throughout the main-stage conversations and breakout sessions, making one thing clear: BFF is about far more than footwear.

⭐️One of the forum’s defining moments came when former NFL quarterback and activist COLIN KAEPERNICK and Detroit native and award-winning journalist JEMELE HILL took the stage for a candid conversation centered around Colin’s new book The Perilous Fight—his journey, activism, the personal and professional consequences of standing firm in his beliefs and more.
