Introducing the HP Physio Running Screen!

We have developed a screen that assesses the key range of motion and strength qualities that are essential for efficient running.

The screen also involves real time video analysis of your running technique on the treadmill.

After the assessment we will present specific strengthening and mobility exercises based on your results and running technique cues to help you run faster with less risk of injury!

Book online at HPPhysios.com reach out to find out more.

🏋️‍♂️ Split-Leg RDL (B-Stance RDL): One of my favourite exercises for early-stage strength training and rehabilitation.

The split-leg (or B-stance) Romanian deadlift is a great way to build strength while improving balance, control and movement quality.

One of the biggest advantages is that it’s a unilateral exercise, meaning the working leg has to do the majority of the work instead of relying on the stronger side to compensate. It also allows you to achieve an excellent training stimulus using lighter loads, making it a safer option early in rehab or when refining technique.

In this video, I’ll show you some simple coaching tips to help you:

✅ Target the correct leg
✅ Maintain good hip and spine position
✅ Avoid the most common technique mistakes
✅ Get more out of every repetition

Whether you’re recovering from injury or looking to improve your strength and athletic performance, choosing the right exercises—and performing them correctly—can make all the difference.

If you’re dealing with pain, returning from injury, or want a personalised strength program, book an assessment at HP Physio. We’ll identify your limitations, prescribe the right exercises, and help you build strength with confidence.

*Side Plank Leg Lift | Glute Med Strength for Hip Stability & Performance*

The side plank leg lift is an excellent exercise for developing glute medius strength, hip control, and lateral hip stability.

The glute med plays a key role in controlling pelvic position, stabilising the hip during single-leg movements, and helping optimise femoral head control within the acetabulum. This makes it a valuable exercise for rehabilitation following hip, knee, and lower limb injuries, as well as improving movement efficiency and performance in athletes.

At HP Physio, we use evidence-based physiotherapy and strength & conditioning principles to help people recover from injury, return to sport, and improve physical performance.

This exercise can be useful for:
✅ Hip and knee rehabilitation
✅ Improving single-leg stability
✅ Running and sporting performance
✅ Strengthening key muscles for injury prevention by @physio.paul

With our experience in high performance surfing we designed a screen that assesses the key areas relevant to surfers in regard to both performance and common areas of pain and discomfort.

After the screen we will prescribe specific exercises to address your individual limitations or areas of improvement. If you keen to have a screen book in online via our website.

Running injuries are all almost always about when running load is greater than your tissues Capacity.

Strength training improves capacity and efficiency.

Gait modifications can also improve efficiency and alter where that load is focused/ where and how it is absorbed by the body. by @physio.paul

The Subtalar joint is one of the first areas I will assess with any lower limb injury or athlete screen.

It plays an important role in shock absorption along with foot, knee and hip mechanics.

For example if a runner has reduced mobility, this will be a risk factor for many lower limb injuries due to the altered shock absorption. In surfers I often find too much subtalar mobility and poor control, especially in the back foot and this has significant implications for muscle recruitment patterns through the knee, hip and low back.

When eversion is limited, the foot can stay too rigid and struggle to dissipate force.

When it’s excessive or poorly controlled, we often see overload through the plantar fascia, tibialis posterior, Achilles, medial ankle — along with altered knee and hip mechanics.

🔎 Palpation gives clues

Palpating around the sinus tarsi and subtalar joint line can tell you a lot about how the foot is functioning. Local tenderness may reflect:

• Repetitive overload
• Poor load tolerance in pronation
• Post–ankle sprain stiffness or irritation
• Compensatory strategies higher up the chain

A tender subtalar joint isn’t always the primary issue — it can be a sign the foot isn’t adapting or controlling load effectively.

Small joint.
