It’s been a week since this happened. I spoke at @limusichalloffame about the subject I bring up with my friends at the slightest provocation: Billy Joel.

This time, it was at a symposium, and the subject was something that has fascinated me for years: Billy Joel’s historic concerts in Mexico in 1991. In thirty minutes, I talked about Mexico, its music, our nineties context and our present moment, the architecture of the Palacio de los Deportes, Puebla, Long Island, and, inevitably, a little bit about myself.

Then, against all odds and in the most surreal way possible, Billy showed up. I didn’t get to ask him any of the thousand questions I’ve always wanted to ask him, but at least I got to say thank you haha.

In the presentation, I also shared the work of people I deeply admire and who, in one way or another, are connected to this story: Fernando Aceves, Rogelio Cuéllar, and my dear Pablo López Luz.

Thank you to Fer and Laura for documenting the moment and joining me on the most Long Island adventure imaginable. To @johnjacksonic, for letting me glimpse, even briefly, the Mexican concerts preserved in Billy’s archive. To @giadoxey and Tom, for their generosity and hospitality and amazing logistics.

Thank you as well to everyone who has patiently listened to me talk about this subject for the past twenty years. To the Hemeroteca Nacional, for being a paradise. To my two homes, Puebla and New York, which are so much alike and have given me everything. And, of course, to M, who always inspires me, and for whom I made that terrible collage that somehow became my favorite part of the presentation.
