It is from this sensibility that @piccolismalti takes shape, the creative universe of Giovanna Ferrero Ventimiglia, whose distinctive approach to design brings together Italian craftsmanship, artistic heritage, and contemporary expression through a language that is feminine, sensual, and unexpected.

Giovanna’s creative journey is deeply rooted in the legacy of her grandfather, Renato Morganti, an architect and engineer with a passion for the ancient art of enamelling. What began as a connection to her family’s artistic heritage has evolved into a personal exploration of materials, colour, light, and imagination, where tradition becomes a starting point for creative freedom.
Three creations capture the many facets of her vision: Carré Cloisonné, where memory and contemporary design meet; Piuma, an exploration of lightness, light, and sensuality; and Forget Me Not, where bronze becomes a playful expression of irony and artistic freedom. Three distinct creative languages, united by a shared intention: to give life to objects with character and identity, capable of surprising, moving, and accompanying people through time.

For Giovanna, authentic beauty does not need to demand attention. Sometimes, a subtle detail, a reflection, or an unexpected form is enough to inspire wonder.

In this new conversation for Masters & Makers Italy, we step into the world of Giovanna Ferrero Ventimiglia and Piccoli Smalti, where craftsmanship becomes emotion, heritage meets imagination, and every creation invites us to see beauty from a different point of view.

Thank you for the warmth, the light, the colours, and the contagious joy with which you welcomed me. A special thank you to the wonderful organisers of EDIT Napoli for creating a place where design, art and creativity meet so beautifully.

Last Friday, at Palazzo Vendramin, I presented Piuma Libera, the new rechargeable version of Piuma, alongside new brass candlesticks with cloisonné enamel.
A special thought to Nadja Romain, who generously hosts me at Alessandro Zoppi’s gallery, in Campo San Maurizio, Venice.
Piuma Libera was born from a desire to set light free: a small rechargeable lamp to carry and place wherever you like. The candlesticks belong to something more ancient , lighting a flame, gathering around its light , in brass, enriched with cloisonné enamel, the material that has always spoken for Piccoli Smalti.

Venice, some years ago.
In one of the most beautiful homes I have ever had the privilege of seeing, where every detail seemed to tell a story.
Looking back at these photographs today, I am even more moved by the presence of that little Yayoi Kusama pumpkin, with its iconic dots, standing beside one of my small enamels.
Two seemingly distant worlds, brought together by the same fascination with colour, art and the transformation of everyday objects into something extraordinary.
Kusama leaves behind a universe of infinite imagination, colour and wonder. And perhaps this is what art does best: it continues to live in the places, objects and memories of those who encounter it.
Today, this photograph feels like a particularly precious memory.

At the heart of Ephemere is a dialogue between Nadja Romain and Giovanna Ferrero Ventimiglia, artist and founder of Piccoli Smalti. Set within the iconic Galerie Alessandro Zoppi on Campo San Maurizio, the presentation grew from a shared sensitivity to place, material and the intimate life of objects.

Ephemere unfolds as a meeting point: between art and design, artist and curator, object and collector, Venice and those who pass through it. The selection reflects both current and future collaborations, bringing together works that carry a sense of craftsmanship, presence and personal connection.

Through Piccoli Smalti, Giovanna reinterprets ancient enamelling techniques in objects that move between function, ornament and artwork. Presented alongside a wider selection chosen by Nadja Romain, her works anchor the project in a language of colour, surface and detail.
Taking its name from the fleeting and the temporary, Ephemere invites visitors to encounter works in a more immediate and personal way — to discover, collect, live with, offer, or carry home from Venice.

The rules of the game are the same. The pieces are not.
I replaced the usual discs with small bronze breasts because femininity deserves objects with personality ….. ironic, precious, a little mischievous.
The result is a parchment backgammon that speaks of strategy and intuition, boldness and lightness. A collectible piece that makes you smile when you discover it and holds its own against whoever dares to play.
Because strategy matters.

Tulip is a vase, yes… but with a lot more personality.
A small bronze sculpture that speaks about femininity without needing to explain too much: soft curves, a strong presence, and that kind of charm that never goes unnoticed.
I like to think of it as an object that takes up space with elegance, irony, and character — just like certain women.
Sensual, strong, a little impertinent, and definitely impossible to ignore.

What a week.
MDW26 brought something I’ll carry with me for a while ….an intimate dinner at home to unveil the Cloisonné candlesticks, a private residence entirely reimagined by me, and selected Piccoli Smalti pieces at Appartamento by Artemest and Neutra at Palazzo Donizzetti.
But what I keep thinking about is the people. Old friends and new ones, collectors who believe in the work, craftsmen who make it possible.

A private residence in Via Barozzi entirely reimagined by Giovanna Ferrero; the Artemest Apartment in Via Donizetti, a curated showcase where leading designers have created immersive environments featuring selected artisan works; and the iconic Palazzo Visconti, staged by Neutra Design.
