WHAT WAS THE DANK WORTH?

"Was it like the buzz from 12s you can't earth?"

Music was produced by the Herbaliser/Soundsci's @ollieteeba and written by British saxophonist Johnny Dankworth. Jay Dee helped me with the vocals. 🙏🏾🕊️

The song appeared on a 12" single and as an exclusive bonus cut for the Japanese version of my second album, "Long Way Up".

I actually still have a few of these 12" singles left. The flip side features "Definition of a Yee-Yee" which was produced by the Alchemist (Mudfoot).

Please see the link in my bio to my webshop.

WHO DAT?

So who in Los Angeles has a DAT machine? I'm on a mission! If I can find one?

I will release, for the first time ever, the song "Kinky Hair" which features one of your most fave Los Angeles emcees from the 90s!

By far, some of his dopest bars EVER!

It was going to be Urban Prop's leading single backed with our other song "Heavyweights Round 2" (featured on the first Project Blowed compilation)–but then?

Capitol Records dropped us. Our production company, Double Platinum, were crackheads that smoked-up all the money. So this dope-ass, jazzy boombap song has just been sitting on this DAT for 33 years now.

Help me get this old-azz song to the new world! #losangeleshiphop #90shiphop #urbanprop #thepharcyde #freestylefellowship by @pickipeople

LESSON 6: THE LECTURE

Los Angeles, California, 1997 – Kind of Blue

During our negotiations with Ubiquity Records, Cut Chemist, then my client, played his "Lesson 6" song for me.

As his manager, I quickly realized the impact this track would have on hardcore hip-hop fans, turntablists and vinyl diggers.

As a fellow hip-hop artist, there was one part of the track that caught my ear.

So I had This Kid Named Miles sample and loop that one part and with that? This song, "Aromatherapy" was created.

Though it was an uncleared sample (as in he didn't own sh*t), I still, as a courtesy, asked Cut Chemist for his permission before sampling it.

Then my homegirl Sarah and I "vocal-sampled"/snatched the melody from Coltrane's "Kind of Blue" for our verses. Miles then played guitar, laid the dope scratches and then once again invited his father, the legendary Fred Tackett, to lay some smoking and jazzy trumpet riffs.

Fred is the one who played the trumpet on my song "Wanna Beez" (feat. Chali 2na). He is also the one who wrote Little Feat's "Fool Yourself". Veteran hip-hop music vinyl diggers should know, by this late juncture, that this song was famously sampled for A Tribe Called Quest's "Bonita Applebum".

I believe, to date, that my music is the only hip-hop music that Fred Tackett has actually made a personal appearance on. And if not that? Then my music represents his very first appearance(s) on hip-hop songs.

I have so many dope BTS stories like this. Stories that have never been told until now. #bgirlchronicles #90shiphop #jazzhop #vinylrecords #cutchemist

THE RETURN OF THE ORIGINAL ART-FORM

I negotiated this contract. I actually negotiated several of his contracts when I managed him, including Ubiquity's "Lesson 6".

I stopped managing him when I moved to London.

There is indeed a deeper story here which actually climaxed in Paris. I hadn't seen or spoken to him in over a decade.

I stopped f*ckin' with him because of the way he allowed his group members to sue me, damage my reputation, bully me and vandalize my father's home.

He, along with Dilated Peoples, just sat back and looked the other way, causing me to end all ties with all of them, almost 30 years ago.

Cut got sh*t-faced drunk that night. He wore guilt like a cheap silk suit. Once inebriated?

He told me the story behind all the J5 harassment. You see? I never even knew. They just started f*ckin' with me out of nowhere (i.e., stole the T-Love Dot-com and tried to sell it back to me at an overinflated and exorbitant price).

He asked me if I knew this white girl named Lori Boula. I did not. The name did not sound familiar to me at all. He broke down how she was the one feeding Jurassic 5 and Dilated Peoples lies about me.

"You don't know her?"

Me: No, I don't. Who TF is she?

Smashed off of some goodazz French red wine, he recounted the whole salacious story. Some 12 years after all the damage had already been done. By a YT bitch that I don't even know. I share THIS story to spread the word:

T-Love is now back living in L.A. Y'all let that hoe know that I'm comin' for her and that she should pray that she never sees me.

The restaurant was closing so I just about carried Cut's drunkazz back to his hotel room where he had the audacity to suggest that I go back to managing him. He showed me a photo of this chick. I now knew what she looked like.

After all the damage done unto me/my life and my father's home. After it got so bad that I had to flee my own hometown. Now, don't get me wrong–had I never moved to London, I would have never connected with Jay Dee. Who did indeed change my life.

But she will still get rushed should I ever see her. Let her azz know that T-Love is looking for her. Tread lightly with your comments. I do bite. by @pickipeople

REEL O' J DILLA

I was in the midst of reorganizing my storage closet over the weekend when I stumbled across 2 more additional Jay Dee analog reels, one of which contains a previously-unreleased Jay Dee track that I'd forgotten all about.

I've been working on this remix project for about a year now. Some days, I'm excited as sh*t to be revisiting/reworking these rare Jay Dee songs.

Other days? I'm not so inspired or motivated.

Not to mention how all the J Dilla phenomena overwhelms the crap outta me... Me, who retired from the music sh*t over 20 years ago and who has been living a super quiet, low-key life.

PICKI FILES 1997– 2000

Well look at what I have stumbled across! Just in time for my book. It has been about 25 years since I've opened this box.

The contents inside it represent factual information that CERTAIN folks, never wanted to go public. 👀

I will keep it all private. For now. Is it time for me to start running subscriptions for that exclusive BTS 90s hip-hop content? 😆

As a hip-hop archivist, I KEEP EVERYTHING! Every story I have recounted over the years can be backed-up by the receipts in this very box. by @pickipeople
