Want to improve your footwork at the kitchen line? Sometimes moving less is the better option 👏

@collinjohns explains how combining bodyweight shifting with efficient footwork can help you reach the ball faster while maintaining balance and control.

Here’s what to focus on:

1) Use bodyweight shifts instead of full steps when you can comfortably reach the ball

2) Stay balanced while shifting your weight to cut off the ball earlier and reduce your opponent’s reaction time

3) Combine weight transfers with reaching or lunging when additional movement is needed

Effective footwork isn’t always about taking more steps. It’s about knowing when to shift, reach, or lunge to get into position with the least amount of unnecessary movement.

Struggling against opponents who constantly lob? Here’s how to beat them 💪

@benjohns_pb breaks down how to defend against frequent defensive lobs and turn overhead opportunities into point-ending shots.

Here’s what to focus on:

1) Turn your body sideways to prepare for a more powerful and controlled overhead

2) Use your shoulder positioning and body rotation to direct the ball where you want it to go

3) Prioritize angles over power to hit overheads your opponents can’t easily retrieve

4) Be patient with deeper lobs and wait for a shorter ball before trying to finish the point

The key to beating frequent lobbers isn’t just hitting harder. It’s developing a reliable overhead, creating better angles, and recognizing when you have the opportunity to put the ball away.

More footwork isn’t always better in pickleball 👀

@collinjohns explains why shifting your body weight can often be more effective than moving your feet at the kitchen line.

Here’s what to focus on:

1) Stay close to the kitchen line to maximize your reach and court position

2) Use bodyweight shifts to reach and cut off balls without unnecessary steps

3) Use your reach over the kitchen to create more aggressive opportunities

4) Avoid excessive foot movement when a simple weight transfer can accomplish the same goal

Sometimes better movement means moving less. Learning how to redistribute your body weight can help you protect your position, reach more balls, and create offensive opportunities without giving up space at the kitchen line.

Defending an overhead from the baseline? Make sure you’re covering the right angles 📐

@benjohns_pb breaks down how you and your partner should adjust your defensive positioning based on where your opponent is hitting from.

Here’s what to focus on:

1) Unlike kitchen-line movement, shift opposite the direction of the ball when defending overheads

2) The outside player should prioritize covering the sharp angle that can pull the ball off the court

3) The other partner should shift toward the middle, where the overhead is most likely to be hit

You can’t cover every possible shot equally. Position yourself to defend the highest-percentage targets and make your opponent beat you with the more difficult option.

Want to improve your footwork and reset dinks at the same time? Add this drill to your practice 💪

In this lesson, @collinjohns breaks down a drill designed to work on shuffling, lunging, recovery, and controlling difficult dinks under pressure.

Here’s how to do it:

1) Shuffle and lunge to move efficiently toward the ball

2) Let the ball drop into your strike zone before playing the reset dink

3) Give the reset enough air to neutralize your opponent’s aggressive dink

4) Push off your outside leg and hip to begin your recovery

5) Recover back toward the center instead of watching your shot after contact

On the other side of the net, this drill also develops offensive dinking by practicing contact near the peak of the bounce to create a more aggressive angle.

Good footwork doesn’t end when you reach the ball. Focus on the full sequence: shuffle, lunge, reset, and recover.

Making this mistake against players rushing through transition? 👀

This is a common mistake when defending an opponent who’s quickly closing toward the kitchen line and how to adjust your shot selection.

Here’s how to fix it:

1) Avoid hitting the ball high and toward the middle of their body

2) A shot that works against a balanced player can become attackable when they’re moving forward quickly. Instead, take some pace off and keep the ball low and soft

3) Add angle and direct the ball toward either side of your opponent

4) Force them to move laterally while their momentum is carrying them forward

When a player skips the split step and rushes toward the kitchen, use that movement against them. Keep the ball low, move them side to side, and make their next shot more difficult.

Want a more consistent half-volley? Start with the right setup and swing path 💪

Let’s break down the mechanics behind controlling a half-volley when you’re catching the ball immediately after the bounce.

1) Establish a wide, stable base and get your paddle low

2) Slightly open your paddle face to help lift the ball from a low contact point

3) Drop the paddle tip to naturally create the upward trajectory you need

4) Use a sharply upward swing path rather than pushing the paddle forward

5) Raise your elbows through the stroke and finish with the paddle face toward the ceiling

6) Keep everything below your waist quiet instead of standing up through the shot

The half-volley happens quickly, so simpler mechanics lead to better consistency. Stay low, keep your base stable, and let the paddle angle and upward swing path do the work.

Opponent rushing through the transition zone? Here’s how to make them pay for it 👀

Here’s how to adjust your shot when an opponent is moving forward quickly without using a split step:

1) Avoid hitting high toward their body, where their forward momentum can help them attack

2) Take some pace off the ball to keep it low and controlled

3) Hit slightly shorter to account for how quickly they’re closing toward the kitchen

4) Target either side of their body to force lateral movement while they’re still moving forward

When an opponent is rushing through transition, don’t give them a ball that works with their momentum. Keep it low, move it to their sides, and force them to adjust.

Want to make your transition game more consistent? Start using the half-volley to your advantage 💪

1) Use the half-volley to handle balls near your feet while maintaining consistency

2) Let the shot buy you time to continue moving toward the kitchen line

3) Recognize when a successful half-volley can set you up to be more aggressive on the next ball

4) Adjust your footwork to intentionally create comfortable half-volley opportunities

5) Keep your stroke mechanics simple and focus on contacting the ball at the right phase of the bounce

Once your half-volley becomes reliable, don’t just use it when you have to. Start looking for opportunities to create it and turn a difficult transition ball into a shot you trust.

What exactly is a half-volley, and why should you have it in your game? 🤔

Here’s what you need to know:

1) A half-volley is hit immediately after the ball bounces, with very little time between the bounce and contact

2) Those low shots hit while you’re in transition create frequent opportunities to use the half-volley

3) Developing this shot gives you another way to defend difficult balls and continue working your way forward

If opponents are constantly trying to find your feet in transition, learning to handle that ball effectively can make a big difference in your ability to reach the kitchen line.

Want to win more points? Stop attacking every opponent the same way ❌

@benjohns_pb explains how your opponent’s grip, strengths, and preferred shots should influence where and how you attack.

Here’s what to focus on:

-Identify which areas your opponent is most comfortable defending

-Pay attention to their grip and how it affects the balls they handle well

-Don’t automatically target the chicken wing. Against some players, that can actually be one of their strongest positions

-Test both sides to learn how far they can comfortably reach and cover

-Watch whether they use a two-handed backhand and adjust your targets accordingly

There isn’t one perfect target for every opponent. Learn their tendencies early, identify where they’re least comfortable, and adapt your strategy around what you see.
