Everyone Here Is Lying by Shari Lapena @sharilapena

A suspenseful and twist-filled domestic thriller. The story of a missing child; a neighborhood filled with suspicious residents; and a web of deception that leaves no one above suspicion.

When nine-year-old Avery Wooler vanishes without a trace, the quiet community is thrown into turmoil. As the search intensifies, it becomes clear that what happened that day is far more complicated—and far more shocking—than anyone really knows. The author masterfully creates suspense through multiple perspectives, allowing readers to see how each character is connected to the mystery. The pacing is fast, the chapters are short.

This story, which explores themes of family secrets, infidelity, deception, and the darkness hidden beneath ordinary lives, is utterly captivating. It may not be the author's most shocking novel, but it is certainly one that keeps readers invested from beginning to end.
If you enjoy fast-paced mysteries filled with secrets, unreliable characters, and neighborhood scandals, this book is definitely worth adding to your reading list.

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones @tayari

A poignant and realistic narrative that explores the complexities of human nature, love, and marriage through alternating perspectives and letters. This heart-wrenching tale follows a black couple whose life is forever changed by a single injustice, pushing their love to the ultimate test.

Celestial and Roy's passionate marriage hits a snag when Roy is sentenced to twelve years in jail. As Roy's prison time grows, Celestial struggles to hold on to their love that has been the core of their relationship. With his early release, Roy returns to Atlanta to rebuild their life, but Celestial has moved on to her childhood friend Andre, leaving their relationship uncertain.

This beautifully written, thought-provoking novel is a slow-burning emotional and chaotic tale of racism, love, and friendship that presents an honest portrayal of its characters and the events that unfold. The book explores not only the injustices of the system and racism but also offers a raw and wise look at marriage, trust, societal expectations, the choices we make and themes of motherhood, fatherhood, tradition.

Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier @jenniferhillierbooks

A chilling dark twisted psychological thriller.
An atmospheric novel, not only intense and unsettling, but also a compelling drama, expertly playing with one's emotions.

The story of three best friends - Angela, who met a tragic end; Georgina, who was sentenced to prison; and Kaiser, who has spent years seeking justice and unraveling the truth.

For fourteen years, Geo kept the secret of what happened to Angela, telling no one. For fourteen years, she bore the burden of Angela's death. What happened that night is more complex and more chilling than anyone really knows.

This story, which explores themes of friendship betrayal, obsessive love, and inexplicable evil, is utterly captivating and will linger in my thoughts for a long time.
First Jennifer Hillier novel I've read, won't be my last! Exceptionally well-written.

The Story She Left Behind by Patti Callahan Henry @pattichenry

A captivating story of mystery and family that explores the deep bond between a mother and child, as well as the enchanting world of children's imaginary companions, make-believe and the power of love.

Bronwyn Newcastle Fordham, a renowned author, wrote a bestselling book in a secret language at twelve, but later disappeared when her daughter Clara was eight, leaving behind her husband and child.

Twenty five years later, Clara has become a children's book illustrator, and receives a mysterious call from London about a dictionary of her mother's secret language. She and her daughter Wynnie travel to London, in search of answers and her mother's papers.

Patti Callahan Henry's writing masterfully blends lush, lyrical prose that weaves together mystery, make-believe, and historical fiction. This novel's evocative and atmospheric writing and beautiful prose brings locations and emotions to life, despite slow pacing in the second half. Set across South Carolina, London, and the Lake District, it has strong themes like parental abandonment, grief, mental health issues and marital breakdown.

Too Old for This by Samantha Downing @smariedowning

Thriller buddy read #thrillerobsessedbuddyread @libraryofbookish

It's a Thrill-Com like Rom-Com. A character-driven thriller comedy that combines elements of anti-heroism, dark humor, cat-and-mouse games, and ageism.

Lottie, a retired serial killer, has been living a quiet life in a small town under an assumed identity. Her peace is disrupted when investigative journalist Plum Dixon arrives, asking questions about the Lottie's past and her involvement in unsolved cases, forcing Lottie to protect her secret. With only one option left, she is forced out of retirement. You're never too old for old tricks.

I enjoyed the blend of thriller and comedy elements, particularly the unique perspective of a bingo-playing senior citizen serial killer, which delivers a cat-and-mouse game with a darkly humorous tone. I appreciated her internal thoughts and struggles with aging, instincts, and her own moral code. While the story starts off interestingly, it becomes repetitive and the pacing, although steady, lacks thriller elements. Despite some twists, they don't feel thrilling, making it a normal story rather than a thriller.

Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall @clarelesliehall @reesesbookclub

This is a poignant tale of love, loss, and the choices that define us, woven together with a masterfully crafted mystery.

"𝚃𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚒𝚜 𝚊 𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎 𝚜𝚝𝚘𝚛𝚢 𝚠𝚒𝚝𝚑 𝚝𝚘𝚘 𝚖𝚊𝚗𝚢 𝚋𝚎𝚐𝚒𝚗𝚗𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜."

Beth and her husband Frank are happily married. But her life is altered when her brother-in-law shoots a dog belonging to Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel returns to the village with his son Leo, stirring up memories for Beth and tensions in the village, forcing her to confront her past and make a choice about who she wants to be.

"𝙾𝚞𝚛𝚜 𝚠𝚊𝚜 𝚊 𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚙𝚕𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚝𝚎𝚍 𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚎 𝚠𝚒𝚝𝚑 𝚖𝚊𝚗𝚢 𝚙𝚒𝚎𝚌𝚎𝚜 𝚝𝚘 𝚏𝚒𝚝 𝚝𝚘𝚐𝚎𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛."

The gradual reveal of the past through dual timeline, Beth and Gabriel's summer romance in 1955 and its rekindling in 1968, kept me engaged, as did the unfolding of the current courtroom case.

Although I'm not typically a fan of love triangles, this skillfully written story expertly combines complex love triangles, loss, murder trials, and forbidden love, set against the backdrop of the English countryside and exploring themes of family drama, mystery, romance, and tragedy, making for a captivating read. This novel navigates the all-consuming world of first love, taking readers on a journey through past and present to reveal the explosive repercussions of passion and impossible choices.
