One of my favorite things about wine tastings is that you’re not simply tasting wine you’re getting a tiny lesson in geography, culture, tradition, and the people behind what’s in your glass.

I recently attended Pierpont’s at Union Station’s wine tasting featuring Basque Wine Imports, where we explored wines from Spain’s Basque Country and learned about the indigenous grapes, vineyards, and winemaking traditions that make this region so unique.

What made the evening especially lovely was how intimate the experience felt. Each person had their own charcuterie board and essentially each table their own private tasting and education. The event was co-hosted by Kerri Lesh and Les Dames d’Escoffier Kansas City, alongside Pierpont’s in-house expert, Michael, who guided us through the wines and helped us understand the region, climate, native grapes, and what we were experiencing in each glass.

Experiences like this are such an accessible way to travel through food and wine without ever leaving Kansas City. I left knowing so much more than when I arrived.

We ended up ordering dinner as well because… when you’re at Pierpont’s, you stay for dinner. The quality and attention to detail in everything they do is immaculate. We enjoyed the tasting out on the Grand Hall patio, but if you’ve never stepped inside Pierpont’s, you absolutely should. The historic setting, that stunning bar, and the classic elegance of the space are an experience all their own.

And there’s already another opportunity to experience it: Pierpont’s next First Friday Wine Tasting is September 4th from 5–7 PM, featuring wines from Bordeaux, France.

Come curious, leave knowing a little more about the world and probably with a new favorite wine.
