Do you ever meet friends where you instantly click and have so much in common? Even in ways that don’t immediately manifest themselves? In my time in KC, I’ve made two good friends where that happened. One moved away, and another friend is also moving away 😭. Well anyway, Q3 is coming to a close and we’re celebrating two amazing items!

First: my friend Jenna is moving to NYC, and we independently have felt the pull to the city. Is this a soft launch for my return to my humble hometown? Maybe, that’s classified, because I haven’t decided what’s on my wishlist yet lol.

Second: Two years ago around this time, I asked you all wonderful friends to talk me into buying a dress I loved but didn’t need. I bought the dress lol - tragically, I never created an opportunity to wear it.. until recently when going to the opera with Jenna. Also two years ago, I was also going through a divorce and my mental health was painted blue. If it isn’t already obvious, I have had a lifelong struggling relationship with food; I cope by turning my midnights into afternoons, wearing friendship bracelets, hosting parties and starving my body. I say that because, well, for those of you who think I’m skinny now, during my divorce two years ago I was 30 pounds lighter and severely underweight. I’m celebrating because for the past few months I’ve stayed at a steady healthy weight with a good balance of muscle/fat, and celebrating that I went out and bought a better fitting dress where I had to go up a size, I DIDN’T spiral AND I felt pretty to take a lot of pictures. (Check in on me in a month)

That original dress will now beautifully hang in my closet with my admiration. 🥀 is how I feel about my friends moving to GA and NYC — but also super proud of them both! There’s a metaphor in this post somewhere, I’m sure. Until next time, xoxo JCxPx1

Our birria beef wonton soup took home the win at Savor the Flavor! Huge thank you to everyone who came out, tried our soup, and supported Don Bosco with us. ❤️

Second year at this event, first place finish… we’ll be riding this one for a while. 😌

@chefpamliberda , you did that.

One of my favorite things about wine tastings is that you’re not simply tasting wine you’re getting a tiny lesson in geography, culture, tradition, and the people behind what’s in your glass.

I recently attended Pierpont’s at Union Station’s wine tasting featuring Basque Wine Imports, where we explored wines from Spain’s Basque Country and learned about the indigenous grapes, vineyards, and winemaking traditions that make this region so unique.

What made the evening especially lovely was how intimate the experience felt. Each person had their own charcuterie board and essentially each table their own private tasting and education. The event was co-hosted by Kerri Lesh and Les Dames d’Escoffier Kansas City, alongside Pierpont’s in-house expert, Michael, who guided us through the wines and helped us understand the region, climate, native grapes, and what we were experiencing in each glass.

Experiences like this are such an accessible way to travel through food and wine without ever leaving Kansas City. I left knowing so much more than when I arrived.

We ended up ordering dinner as well because… when you’re at Pierpont’s, you stay for dinner. The quality and attention to detail in everything they do is immaculate. We enjoyed the tasting out on the Grand Hall patio, but if you’ve never stepped inside Pierpont’s, you absolutely should. The historic setting, that stunning bar, and the classic elegance of the space are an experience all their own.

And there’s already another opportunity to experience it: Pierpont’s next First Friday Wine Tasting is September 4th from 5–7 PM, featuring wines from Bordeaux, France.

Come curious, leave knowing a little more about the world and probably with a new favorite wine.

Thank you for such a delightful evening @pierponts

The JOY of surviving the Berlin Wall! It was an honor to tell my story (and my mother's) of escape from behind the Iron Curtain last Thursday at the Downtown KC Kiwanis Club meeting @pierponts

"The Berlin Wall: A World Divided" is the current exhibit @unionstationkc .
It's a powerful immersive experience exploring the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall and the personal stories of people caught in the middle of the Cold War.

The Downtown KC Kiwanis Club has as its mission to better the community "one child at a time". Poverty and ignorance create their own walls and the Kiwanis are devoted to tearing those walls down.

I couldn't have received better support and inspiration to tell my story of childhood escape and a life redeemed by liberation.

"Every time a child is saved from the dark side of life, every time one of us makes the effort to make a difference in a child's life, we add light and healing to our own lives." - Oprah Winfrey
