Making sense of creativity and art entrepreneurship

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

@pixmadeobjects launched an essential read for all students (and artists!)- "Wake up, Pixoto!" At her book signing at Basheer Books on 25th October 2025, we spoke about the role of educators, boundaries and ethics in education.

“The truth shall set you free”
•What young Pixoto thought he meant: Once you discover what you feel and want, you will know what you need to move forward in life.
•What it came to mean: You don’t know the truth but I do.🚩Positions himself as the arbiter of what is real and what isn’t.

“Everyone…our art brings meaning to our lives”
•What young Pixoto thought he meant: Art can be our loving kind non-judgmental space to express ourselves.
•What it came to mean: What we make is good and meaningful. What others make is shallow and meaningless.
🚩🚩Builds up the “us versus them” mentality.

“Don’t be weak”
•What young Pixoto thought he meant: Try not to let fear influence your decisions and choices.
•What it came to mean: Your feelings are invalid. You should feel THIS other way instead.
🚩🚩🚩Done repeatedly, this severs your connection to your sense of self, and could push you to depend on another (him, in this case) for guidance.

Older Pixoto now says “WTF?!” in her comic book “Wake Up, Pixoto!” published by the wonderful @drawnandquarterly

Come by @basheergraphic THIS Saturday, from 4pm-5pm, where I will have a conversation with Amy of @pikaland regarding the makings of this book! ❤️ by @pikaland

@tokosuemalaysia sat me down for a 40-minute impromptu interview when I was down in KL! We spoke about my Good to Know zine series (which I've reprinted for her to bring to @klzineetc), art education, and why I think creative entrepreneurship is something worth exploring as an artist. Check out @communicationarts' Illustration Annual 65! I shared my thoughts about the competition entries (such amazing works!) while raising questions about culture, context and perception within the broader lens of illustration, communications and art.

And with @klillustrationfair happening this weekend, I thought I'd share a small snippet of my thoughts on art entrepreneurship that made its way into the issue. A lot of my past students (and friends) are exhibiting this weekend, and I could not be more thrilled at how far they've come ❤️

One of the fun things I get to do this year: being a jury member of @communicationarts 65th annual international Illustration Competition! If you'd like to submit an entry, the deadline is on the 12th of January. More details can be found here: https://www.commarts.com/competition/2024-illustration

I've been bingeing on graphic novels since moving to Singapore, easily digesting about 20-30 titles in the past 6 months (in addition to the crazy amount of reading I'm doing for my study in MA in Arts Pedagogy & Practice). Thought I'd start to document some of them here on this ol' dusty Instagram account while I update the website - an email update is pending! (Also wow there's so many new stuff here on Instagram, I don't know where to start, WTF)

This is Vignettes of Ystov by @williambgoldsmith. The format of the story is intriguing, as it's told over several chapters, each on a two-page spread. I found myself flipping through the book several times as I recalled a character mentioned in a previous one, and my brain trying to make sense of each character's journey and seeing if they pop up in other chapters too (they do!) Beautiful brushwork and restrained use of colors throughout too.

The book is available at @nationallibrarysg and in your favorite bookstores (hopefully!)

I made a 5-page abstract comic for @chicksoncomics about friendships in adulthood; the result of a fun night of conversation with @pixmadeobjects @illobyanngee @claritalagos @julia_barata @deliusdibujante @martina.trach @ottocohete @amaraququ and @preetdraws ❤️ #comics #womenincomics #abstractart #abstractnarrative (it's a little blurry because I was lazy and took some shortcuts to post it, but for a clearer version, do checkout the link to the full zine by the rest of the chicas at @chicksoncomics!) by @pikaland
