In a 1:1 with @pilatesjoakim on the weekend. We were working on back strength while in a thoracic extension without dumping into my lumbars. Dumping into my lower back is something I do often without recognising I’ve done it. I find it hard to feel when I’ve gone too far. We also worked on external and internal rotation of the leg using the correct muscles and alignment which is also something I struggle with.

See Me in Tokyo
It’s always a great time at Junko’s amazing Studio on Tokyo.
On Thursday the 5th of November I’m presenting a Practical Application to Low Back Pain Workshop.
We’ll cover:
How to choose exercises for clients with Low Back Pain
Modifications to stay within the pain-free range of movement
Keep exercising safely
Supporting client’s willingness to improve
Great for Pilates instructors, but also for those who want to expand their own practice!
No need for special Apparatus in this Mat Based session.
This is a great addition to the previous theory edition.
Join us for an opportunity to deepen your understanding of low back pain and expand your teaching scope.
On Friday the 6th of November it is time for Progressions Toward Advanced Exercises
Many Teacher Trainees feel that the System 3 exercises are much more challenging than those in System 1.
In this Workshop I will teach how to progress from the fundamental exercises toward the advanced exercises, including practice methods, variations, progressions, and key teaching points.
Attendees can submit their preferred exercises, and we will explore them across the Apparatus in the Studio.

The Reformer is Not a Multigym
There are many genius elements to the Universal Reformer. The use of springs rather than weights and pulleys, for one. But the unusual movement of the carriage along tracks when a relatively small force is applied is a crucial element in experiencing the integration of the Pilates Method through the whole body.
As soon as you step off the Reformer onto the floor, or even a box, you solidify your base of support, which means that the action becomes much more isolated at the moving joint.
By all means, we can use this as a variation to help a client find the right joint action, but the Reformer was never designed to be simply a handle on a pulley like the multigym.
Moving your body through space is pivotal. The unnatural sensation of shifting your whole body along the rails when you use a small muscle group acting on a tiny joint surprises the brain. It forces the mind to get involved and help coordinate all the stabilisers, not just around the joint in question, but at every point of contact.
If you just want to use a simple pulley system – go to the gym. Their fitness equipment is designed to tolerate brute force and sloppy actions.
If you want to learn how a small action at the end of one arm can affect the other end of the opposite leg (and everything in between), you’ve come to the right place.
Pilates doesn’t make me stronger. It teaches me to use my strength better!

The Art of Observation

For our Pilates Teacher Trainees, Observation makes up the largest portion of their Log Book hours and is arguably the most important.

This is where you learn what works with clients and sometimes what doesn’t.
Your task is not to memorise the repertoire or replicate a class. You’ll never encounter exactly the same situation again.
You are there to learn How to Teach.
Watch how the Teacher interacts with clients. Which instructions work best, and why?
We teach the value of Visual, Auditory and Tactile cues. Observe how these are used and when they succeed or fail.
Consider:
• Where does the Teacher position themselves? Can everyone see them?
• Do they use clients’ names?
• Is there a theme to the class?
• How do exercises flow from one to another, or between apparatus?
• Do clients receive different props, instructions or variations? Why?
• How does the Teacher manage personalities, injuries, disabilities, high achievers and client requests?
• How are latecomers or clients struggling with instructions managed?
We teach these skills during the course. Observation is your opportunity to see them in action.
There is a lot to learn, but concentrate on one aspect at a time and enjoy the journey.
Observation Etiquette
I’ve also learned that some basic Studio etiquette needs spelling out!
• Follow the Studio’s rules.
• Arrive before class starts.
• If you leave during class, don’t re-enter and disturb the flow.
• Sit quietly, out of the way, without excessive movement.
• Use pencils for note-taking.
• No eating, drinking, chewing gum, sleeping or checking phones or wrist devices.
• Never contradict the Teacher in front of clients.
• Follow instructions from the Teacher or clients.
• Avoid sitting too close to clients or directly in their line of sight.
• Help the Teacher set up before class and clean up afterwards.
Remember, you are Observing the art of Teaching, and that is an art in itself.

If we can fix the feet, we have an opportunity to improve posture and overall performance. If we don’t address the feet, those improvements are much harder to achieve.
Lolita San Miguel emphasises that working the feet in Pre-Pilates is essential.
Footwork comes first on Joseph Pilates’ list of Reformer exercises.
Pilates V is standing to attention—the starting stance for every soldier learning drill.
A surfer needs to know their stance: goofy or regular?
Good posture.
It all starts with the feet.

Everyone cleans their own kit after a workout at Bälans. That way you know you are walking in to a clean station.
However, Albie doesn’t really get the details of the brief. He’s more of a ‘little bit here and there’ kind of guy rather than paying attention to the subject at hand.

If only we all had his confidence after such a light dusting to declare “They’re all clean now!”

Away for a few days with the family at Center Parcs.
It’s not easy to get a moment to oneself in a place designed to keep the whole family moving all day. But everyone sleeps well at night!

Those who ask questions learn the true meaning of things.

I love coming down to Birmingham, where Candace has created a great space for Pilates.

She wanted to expand her knowledge of the Method and undertook Lolita’s Legacy, our comprehensive training programme. While on the course, she expanded her business and opened two Studios within just a few months.

This is my third visit to @itsstudio88 , where she continues to promote the concept of personal development and self-improvement.

Her team is amazing! Their questions and suggestions show an openness and desire to learn. This attitude allows us to make the most of whatever underlying training we have. It takes us beyond the manuals, helps us really absorb the work and ultimately delivers the best possible outcomes for our clients.

It’s always a fun weekend in Birmingham!

Post Pilates
One of the best lessons Lolita San Miguel taught me is the importance of rounding off the workout.
Hard work, restorative movement, exploratory play, are all improved when we finish with some Post Pilates.
Testing the spinal movements, shoulders, and wrists in a standing position confirms and embeds the workout we’ve just done.
It also prepares us for the next moment of the day. Loosen off and move on.

Sunset over San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The international language of Pilates gives me an amazing privilege to travel, to meet likeminded people around the world.
This trip, a few years back, was full of amazing memories.

I’m looking forward to going to Birmingham this weekend to run some workshops for the team and clients at Studio 88.
Candace has created such a great atmosphere, and it is a real pleasure to work with her and her team.

We went to the studio to catch up on a couple of admin items of Friday night and Albie walked up the corridor on his own. I heard him laughing and chattering to himself and walked along to find that he’d set this up for himself.
Moon box shoulder presses in a swanned position and wild legs out the back. This kid is a little genius!
Albie has Prader–Willi Syndrome, which brings a host of challenges. Coordinating movement with hypotonic muscles is just one.
