These guys know a thing or two about movement. Their work depends on understanding how bodies move, so hearing this from them means a lot to us.

Pilates Obsession isn’t just another class library to scroll through. It’s a system @saracolquhoun has built from over 23 years of teaching, where every session builds on the last so you can feel the progress week to week.

If you’ve just found us, hi, I’m Sara 👋 I wanted to explain what Pilates Obsession really is, because it’s not a library of random classes.

I built it around one simple idea: if the demand on your body doesn’t increase, your body doesn’t change. That’s why so many people think you can’t build muscle doing Pilates. They’re never doing the same thing twice, so nothing gets the chance to progress.

My programs move in three-week strength blocks, with each class building on the last. Whether you’re on the mat or the reformer, you’re always being taken a little further than last week. by @pilatesobsession_

We don’t need to say much else here.

@masonsixtencox came to Sara with years of lower back issues and 12 years of professional sport behind him.

He trained with her in person, and the programming he’s describing is the same programming that sits inside the app.

If you needed a sign to start one of Sara’s programs, this is it.

Feeling your reformer bridges in your lower back instead of your hamstrings? This tip's for you.

Technique Tuesday: Reformer Bridges 💪

The most common mistake I see is pushing the carriage out as your hips lift. Your pelvis drops into an arch through the lower back, and your hamstrings stop taking the load.

The Fix: think about pulling your hips towards your heels, like you're dragging the carriage in towards the footbar.

If you’re unable to do that on the spring you're on, go up a spring. It stabilises the carriage which takes some of the pressure off the hamstrings and allows you to move with more core control. This unloads the lower back and gets you back into the hip extensors while you build strength in this movement.

Try it and let me know how it feels in your next Reformer workout 📲👇 by @pilatesobsession_

The progression to Control Balance Front 👀

Beginner is a plank with your feet lowered and your upper body lifted higher. That takes load off your upper body and core, so you can focus on your breath and alignment while you get used to pushing the carriage out.

Advanced brings the feet back up and the hands down. That’s the traditional Core Balance Front, with the full load through your upper body and core.

We work through progressions like this in the Pilates Obsession app, with each session building on the last until you’re ready for the advanced version.

Leaning back to pull the straps? That’s momentum doing the work your arms should be.

Technique Tuesday: kneeling chest expansion 💪

When momentum drives the pull, your ribs flare, your lower back takes the pressure, and your arms and core miss out. Start with your breath out, zip up through the abdominals, and only pull as far as you can keep your hips, ribs, shoulders and head stacked.

Try this: stay upright and pull from the arms only. That’s your true range. Once it feels solid, add the hip action back in.

Save this for your next session and explore the techniques library in the app 📲

A little reformer inspiration for your feed ✨

Moving with intention makes all the difference & it’s exactly how I program in the Pilates Obsession app. Whether you are finding deep spinal articulation or pressing away for a full body stretch, it’s all about control.

Next session, ask yourself: am I moving with intention, or just moving? 🤔 by @pilatesobsession_

I’m on holidays at the moment and was going to film today’s workout, but I’m taking this as another reminder that switch off time on holidays has to come first. This balance can be hard for me. Pilates is how I switch off, but it’s also my job, so there’s sometimes a pressure to film every workout.

So instead, here’s me moving through the same workout back at home. It’s a strength and mobility session I come back to all of the time.

Work through everything in the carousel, then repeat it for a second round ✨

Technique Tuesday: Leg circles in straps 💪

Bigger is not always better when doing leg circles.

Here is the cue that changes this exercise completely: push from the back of your hips. (Not your feet)

Most people let momentum drive the size of the circle, which scoops the tailbone and switches the core off.

Bring your legs only as high as you can keep your tailbone down, and actively push from the hamstrings 🔥🔥

One movement, two completely different feelings 🤍

On the mat, the challenge is keeping your hips lifted high while rotating your torso and reaching to your back foot.

When you add the reformer, the moving carriage forces your deep core and shoulder complex to stabilise as you twist.

You don’t need more motivation, you need a plan 🤍

Every program in the app is built to progress, so each week asks a little more of you than the last. You feel the difference, and feeling it is what keeps you coming back.

These messages from our community are proof of that, and I love reading every single one.
