“The Scar” - emotional intelligence is a blessing and a curse.

I wrote this piece on my week offline. It would seem a few of my ex relationships came back to me, including this one. Our love was powerful, tender, magnetic, all consuming and fleeting - yet I could see how incompatible we would become.

Love is not enough, and even in my early 20s I had enough awareness that we would slowly destroy each other, like watching a car crash in slow motion.

This is the last of my pieces I wrote whilst I was offline, so it looks like I’ll need to get creating again 😉

“Fire and Grit” - How are you 6?! 🥹😭 I wrote this piece for you back in March, and even now, every single word is just so you.

Getting to be your mum is an absolute privilege.

“1 in 3” - dedicated to Jane Doe, and all my fellow women who have always deserved better.

On my temporary break from my page, I wrote this piece, which sadly came to me effortlessly. Even I was unaware how much rage I still held, for my own experiences and of those of my fellow women.

I understand the complexities in our society. That the parameters are always evolving but facts are facts - sexual assault is a crime and women are still oppressed in systems that openly and undeniably choose to prioritise men’s futures, over women’s lives.

As a side note: I have had the pleasure of continuing to heal my own wounds towards men, by the few and close bonds I have grown over the years. I’ve been selective, having been burnt in the past but these men have shown me what it is to be a trusted ally.
One of those connections is @julian.mccauley.poems who I have spent many hours talking with on this and linked topics in women’s rights.

We are both in agreement that there is a genuine and growing threat that if people in actual power don’t finally address the root cause - we are all going to suffer (more than we already are). Unlike women, men do not know how or have healthy ways to connect with each other. The communities set-up for men are always founded on shallow, bravado based or over-sexualised bonds that only deepen the illness, and further suppresses male shame. It’s also why some men, turn to multiple women to seek genuine connections their male friends cannot fulfil, or choose suicide from loneliness.

Ladies, I don’t want you to think I’m not rage filled or that I’m over sympathising with the male collective. I am furious that 57 men got the message “free pussy” and did nothing or took part in committing a crime.

I’m choosing to use my rage and look at the bigger picture in this. That we only make real change by addressing the root cause - which starts from primary school age and how boys have not been taught, even now how to connect with each other. I see it firsthand and secondhand with the boys in my eldest daughter’s class.

The problem will persist, if we don’t address it at the source.

“Into the Shadows” - good morning, my lil’ star-chasers and heartbreakers 😉💔

Right, last time I did a sonnet you quite enjoyed seeing my process, so here goes:

Slide 1: is my submission for this month’s Sonnet Sunday (Into the Shadows). I’m not going to lie, I struggled with time and not connecting to this theme - I wanted to do something darker, linking in with Halloween but I just couldn’t get it. So I went back to basics, writing about energy, nature and all things I love.

I also managed to get super close to ‘proper’ iambic pentameter 🥴 maybe I’ll fully nail it next month.

Slide 2: shows you where I started. The first draft focused on hitting the syllable count and idea. From there I got the dictionary out to evolve the piece using better words for nicer flow of iambic pentameter…(ish), as Matt taught me.

Slide 3: is the background image taken from google of a volcanic eruption in Hawaii. I usually like to use my own photography, but that would’ve ended in death in this case.

My approach to formal poetry is totally different. With free verse I usually just let it flow from me, whereas with this, I enjoy the challenge of evolving and building something.

I’ll look to catch up with all your pieces later, especially those from today’s Sunday Sonnets. For now I must dash, Ada turns 6 this week and we’re off to our local zoo for the day - birthday boom 🥰💥

“Loves truest form” - I said I’ve still been writing, and I wasn’t fibbing.

For me, this piece expresses loves truest form whilst also accepting a reality. Having lost many connections over the years, some abruptly, others naturally - I’ve realised ‘love’ really does come to us in all forms, but when someone can still quietly cheer for you, genuinely wanting you to succeed even when they might not share in the final outcome…well, for me, that’s loves truest form.

Oh, hey 👋 fancy seeing you here, my sexy lil’ bunnies.

I must say, I’ve bloody missed you all and your gorgeous writing!

After some pondering, I decided whilst I was applying for jobs, it was important that I deactivated my poetry account (for the interviews & recruitment stages). Don’t misunderstand me, I am SO proud of my work here, but without a pen name (my personal choice) I leave myself open to potential judgment, especially against my most personal pieces…and the corporate world, well it often has different views on vulnerability.

But I’m happy to confirm I’ve secured a contract for the next 9 months! Best of all? I get the luxury of being able to have next summer off with my girls again 🥹

For those on here closest to me, they already know I took Voluntary Redundancy (VR) back in June, as the NHS organisation I worked for is closing in 2027. In total, I’ve worked the last 15 years within the NHS at different organisations, of which some…damn near broke me. I’ve experienced some of the most toxic managers I have ever had the misfortune of needing to share air with…and it’s why, for now, I’m pleased to close that chapter for a while.
However, there was something weirdly healing receiving my offer to lead a small team of my own, even on an interim basis. Mainly because I’m going to take every past trauma put in me from work and alchemise it into uplifting each one of them and all whilst trying to help them, however they might need it for those 9 months.

You’ll also be pleased to know, that even with my account deactivated I’ve been writing regularly and will be sharing those pieces over the coming days.

So, for now, enjoy my carousel of ‘corporate Sam’ bits n bobs, and because I don’t like to leave anything on a sour note (where I can influence it) - I’ve chosen to recognise the few in the NHS who made my journey a safer place, and who are some of my dearest friends now.

“The Shadows We Share” - what’s that? Sam has written a sad poem…did hell freeze over?

No but all jokes aside, living with CPTSD is incredibly hard. Whilst (on the whole) I have my condition pretty nailed down, the flare ups and triggers are brutal and often those I love the most, are casualties to my previous wounds and shadows.

After a trigger, I often struggle to articulate how I feel in the moments right after the aftermath - when I return back into my body. This poem is the best I can do, to explain it.

And if you’re navigating CPTSD too, I see you. The road is not short or easy, but there are pros to getting the diagnosis and working with it.
