October is National Pit Bull Awareness Month!

Did you know:

1️⃣ Pit bull isn’t just one breed! The term is commonly used to describe several breeds and their mixes, including:

• American Pit Bull Terrier
• American Staffordshire Terrier
• Staffordshire Bull Terrier
• American Bully
• American Bulldog

In fact, the American Kennel Club (AKC) doesn’t even recognize “pit bull” as a single breed! (Best Friends Animal Society; AKC)

2️⃣ Pit bull–type dogs have a rich history! Their ancestors originated in Britain, where Bulldogs were used in bull-baiting and later crossed with terriers. Over time, their descendants took on a variety of roles, including farm work, hunting, guarding, and companionship. They’ve been part of American families for generations and continue to be cherished companions today! (AKC; ASPCA)

3️⃣ Pit bull–type dogs perform well on temperament tests! According to the American Temperament Test Society’s January 2023 cumulative statistics, 87.6% of tested American Pit Bull Terriers passed its temperament test. For comparison, the recorded pass rates were 85.9% for Golden Retrievers and 83.1% for Border Collies. (American Temperament Test Society)

4️⃣ Pit bulls do NOT have locking jaws! Despite this common myth, pit bull–type dogs have no special anatomical mechanism that allows their jaws to lock. In fact, no dog breed has a locking jaw! (Best Friends Animal Society)

5️⃣ You can make a difference by adopting a pittie! Pit bull–type dogs are frequently found in animal shelters, where breed labels and negative stereotypes can affect their chances of adoption. By choosing to adopt, you’re giving a deserving dog a chance at a loving home while helping shelters make room for more animals in need. (Best Friends Animal Society; ASPCA)
