Now open: 'Clare Woods: Garden Without Seasons'.

This summer, the bold, richly coloured paintings of Clare Woods RA are displayed throughout Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery.

Featuring 29 new and recent works — all created over the last four years — the exhibition brings together paintings, collages and prints, and takes the natural world as its central motif.

In developing a new body of work for the exhibition, Woods was drawn to the lingering presence of Sir John Soane and his legacy in the architecture and light effects of Pitzhanger, as well as thoughts of the collection that would once have been housed here.

Hovering between abstraction and figuration, her paintings are characterised by fluid mark-making and deep hues. Woods’s luscious swirls and strokes of paint, and collaged works, capture moments of luminescent beauty, where shadows often create an air of melancholy or foreboding.

Step inside Sir Peter Blake’s recreated studio this November. Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery presents 'Peter Blake: In the Studio', a major exhibition celebrating the life and work of Sir Peter Blake, one of the defining figures of British Pop Art.

Alongside paintings, sculpture, collages and works on paper, the exhibition will recreate Blake’s West London studio inside Pitzhanger, offering a rare and intimate insight into the artist’s world, working life and the remarkable collection of objects that have inspired him over many years.

With connections to Ealing’s music and film heritage, and works inspired by Hogarth shown in the Manor, it promises a richly layered portrait of a British icon.

2027 at Pitzhanger. We’re pleased to reveal our 2027 exhibition programme — bringing together new perspectives on British painting, the darkly compelling world of Paula Rego’s nursery rhymes, and major works by Sean Scully.

Many Stories
6 May – 8 August 2027
Many Stories is the first major UK exhibition of figurative painting by women artists from the South Asian diaspora. It will bring together works by 17 artists, including both emerging and established practitioners.

Paula Rego: Nursery Rhymes
6 May – 8 August 2027
In 1989, Paula Rego (1935–2022) made one of her most coveted bodies of works, a group of 25 prints reimagining English nursery rhymes, seemingly innocent verses that continue to be retold to children after hundreds of years.

Sean Scully: Nature Never Sleeps
September 2027 – January 2028
For Autumn 2027, Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery will present an exhibition of large-scale paintings, works on paper, writing and sculpture by the celebrated artist Sean Scully (b. 1945).

There is much more to discover in the year ahead. Explore the full 2027 programme through the link in our bio — and become a Member for year-round access to exhibitions and special events while supporting Pitzhanger.

Many of the works in ‘Clare Woods: Garden Without Seasons’ were created in direct response to Pitzhanger Manor.

Clare considers how recurring subjects — including planters, glasshouses and stained glass — connect with the building, its gardens and its history.

Pitzhanger was designed by Sir John Soane as a country retreat — a place for entertaining and architectural experimentation. Clare reflects on how his intentions remain present in the building, its relationship with the garden and the traces of its history.

As she says in the exhibition audio guide, “the hand of someone can still be very present.”

Discover ‘Garden Without Seasons’ across the galleries and historic manor.

On 1 October, hear Clare Woods discuss the exhibition with Pitzhanger Director Rebecca Lyons. Book via the link in bio.

Before he became one of Britain’s most influential architects, John Soane was a bricklayer’s son.

Born on this day on 10 September 1753, Soane left school young and worked as a hod carrier before entering the office of architect George Dance at the age of 15.

From those beginnings came a career defined by restless invention. Soane stripped back classical conventions and experimented boldly with colour, light and space — ideas that divided opinion in his lifetime, but would later lead him to be seen as a forerunner of modern architecture.

Pitzhanger holds that story within its walls. Soane had first encountered the house as Dance’s young apprentice. When he returned decades later as its owner and architect, he kept part of that earlier building and transformed Pitzhanger into a laboratory for his own ideas.

His ambitions extended beyond his buildings. As Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy, he taught generations of students, while his house and collection in Lincoln’s Inn Fields were ultimately preserved for the benefit of the public and future students.

On his 273rd birthday, we celebrate an architect whose willingness to rethink the past continues to shape the present.

Step inside Pitzhanger and encounter Soane’s ideas for yourself.

‘Clare Woods: Garden Without Seasons’ brings paintings, collages and screenprints into distinct areas across the contemporary galleries and historic manor. The character and scale of each space shaped the exhibition, allowing its different elements to remain separate while continuing to speak to one another.

As Clare Woods puts it, “It feels as though we’ve been able to make three exhibitions.”

Explore ‘Garden Without Seasons’ in more depth on our Curator Tour on 3 September.

And on 1 October, Clare Woods joins Pitzhanger Director Rebecca Lyons in conversation about the exhibition and her practice.

After two fully booked Wild Plant Walks at our August Garden Party, Usma Shah returns to Pitzhanger for 'Trees and Teas of All Seasons' on Thursday 3 September.

Join her for a gentle evening walk through Pitzhanger and Walpole Park, learning to identify deciduous and evergreen trees through the seasons and discovering some of their traditional uses for food, medicine and everyday life. The walk ends with a selection of herbal teas inspired by trees and nature.

It’s a fitting companion to 'Clare Woods: Garden Without Seasons', where flora, still life and the natural world sit at the centre of the exhibition.

Alongside Usma’s walk, September’s Thursday Late offers another way to explore the natural world: a 6.30pm curator tour of 'Garden Without Seasons'.

📅 Thursday 3 September, 6–7.30pm
🎟️ Trees and Teas of All Seasons: £5
🧒 Under-16s join free with a paying adult

🎨 Also during Thursday Late, Ealing residents can explore the historic manor and 'Clare Woods: Garden Without Seasons' with pay-what-you-can admission from 5–8pm. The 6.30pm curator tour is included with admission.

Process is key to Clare Woods’s practice.

Woods begins with a photograph, drawn from a vast archive of found and personal photography. Once her ‘starter’ image is selected, she produces a line drawing which is scaled up using a projector and redrawn onto aluminium panels primed in white gesso.

Working flat on trestle tables, each panel is painted from above using oil paint, wet on wet, in a single session.

Collage follows painting. At the end of each painting day, Woods uses the leftover colour by painting pieces of paper. These are later cut and used in collages.

Explore paintings, collages and screenprints in ‘Clare Woods: Garden Without Seasons’, open until 8 November.
