In The Bronx, with my Madrina, rooted in the spiritual traditions of my ancestors. 🕯️🌿

My work and service have also connected me deeply to The Bronx. This spiritual practice honors those who came before me and gives me strength.

At a time of genocide in Palestine 🇵🇸, when colonialism and imperialism try to eat away at our souls, my faith and reverence for our Indigenous and African spiritual traditions guide me, nourish me, and strengthen me.

That same ancestral strength lives in the people of Puerto Rico who are fighting against the colonial and capitalist exploitation of our land and natural reserves while the island is facing a devastating drought. Esencia No Va.🇵🇷

These traditions have survived because our ancestors refused to let them be erased. I honor them by keeping the faith alive.

Amada mía — Beloved 🩶

I rescued her during the pandemic from a basement in the Bronx.
She was a kindred spirit—so gentle and deeply present.

Today, she was held in my arms and loved through her final breath.
In that painful moment, I stayed with her.
She had a dignified, witnessed passing, surrounded by love.

My heart is heavy with grief.

On my way home, I stopped at a church. I walked in with my grief, seeking comfort. A Haitian priest, Father Cyprien met me with compassion, prayed over me, and blessed me. I lit a candle for Amada, and as I stepped out, the church bells rang. I received it as a sign.

And in this moment, I also feel a deep awareness and gratitude that I was able to hold her, to say goodbye, to honor her life with love and ritual.

Holding in my heart the lives lost and the grief carried across Gaza, Iran, Lebanon, Cuba, Congo, and Sudan…
families separated and deported through ICE violence…
and trans communities facing erasure and harm.

Today I honor my Amada.
And I feel the weight of so much grief in this world.

Rest in Love, Amada Mía
You were deeply loved. Always. 🕊️🐈‍⬛

I was on the NYC holiday nostalgia train — the one that only runs on Sundays in December.

The metal ceiling fans humming, wind in my hair.
Wheat-colored rattan-covered seats.
Wrought-iron hand poles creaking as you hung on.
The old subway bulbs flickering as we darted through stations.
Ads for Campbell’s soup and Heinz spaghetti still lining the walls.

For a few stops, I was teleported back into my childhood.

The holidays always sting.
December carries the memory of my mother — her apartment in Washington Heights burned completely as she was living with dementia. She died three months later.
Joy and loss have never been separate for me.

And cruelty continues — ICE-related violence, forced deportations, and genocide in Gaza 🇵🇸.

Holding all of it.

“Quieren quitarme el río y también la playa, quieren el barrio mío y que abuelita se vaya...”
- Bad Bunny, “Lo que le pasó a Hawaii”

📍San Juan, Puerto Rico- The Bad Bunny @badbunnypr residency was joyous and nourishing for my soul. He amplifies— soulfully, nostalgically-our decades-long struggles with displacement, gentrification, and the erasure of our culture and people, reminding us of the importance of not forgetting self- Love as
Puerto Ricans. In these times, when sadness and despair for the Palestinian people-the grief and anger-can feel
overpowering, being in community is a spiritual balm-an affirmation of love and the self-determination of my people seeking liberation from colonialism and imperialism.

At the march for Puerto Rican independence in Viejo San Juan, I was blessed to meet 97 year old Puerto Rican author and legendary revolutionary from the 1950s, Don Heriberto Marín Torres-a living reminder of our long legacy of struggle and dignity.

In support & solidarity for 🇵🇸 Palestine and the fight for a free Puerto Rico are bound together in the same call for sovereignty, dignity, liberation, and against remilitarization.

📍Andalucía, Spain-Hundreds of thousands of olive trees lined the road as we drove past in Andalucía, Spain — and I dreamed of Palestine while awake.

In Palestine, it’s not only the sacred olive trees which have been lost.

It’s starvation and massacres.

It’s separation of family and friends.

It’s witnessing of killing .

It’s aerial bombings dropping mass destruction.

And yet the world stays silent.

I am deeply saddened and enraged by the murder of Anas Al-Sharif and his brave colleagues — Al Jazeera @aljazeeraenglish journalists who gave their lives to tell the truth of the genocide .

To those of you out there who stay silent or complicit — don’t you MF dare to equalize oppression.

Whether 1,000 deaths or 1 million deaths — genocide is genocide.

It is the extinction and erasure of a people.

Anas Al-Sharif (say his name)was a father, a son, a husband, a journalist , a courageous witness to genocide.

Right now, hundreds of thousands of women and children in Gaza are starving, trapped by a cruel blockade blocking food, water, and medicine.

His final words remind us: “Do not forget Gaza… And do not forget me in your righteous prayers.”

This could be any journalist. Any one of us.

How many more must suffer and be killed before we all share in collective outrage, stop the genocide, and hold Israel and the United States responsible?

Inshallah, justice and peace will come.
⸻
A call to God:

‎اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ وَاحْمِ أَخْوَانَن وَأَخَوَاتَنَا فِي غَزَّةَ، وَمَنَحْهُمْ النَّصْرَ وَالتَّغَلُّبَ عَلَى الظُّلْمِ.
O Allah, bless and protect our brothers and sisters in Gaza. Grant them victory and let them overcome in the face of oppression.
——
Please share post to raise awareness and to honor the memory of Anas Al-Sharif and all those suffering in Palestine .

📍Mexico City – Zócalo Plaza
Teachers have transformed the plaza into a village as a form of protest for workers rights.
They’ve been living in brightly colored tents-makeshift homes, 24/7, for over a month—
with portable bathrooms, and no plans to leave until September.
They’re demanding fair wages, pensions, dignity.
Met by military and police nearby.
But they stay.
They resist.

📍Los Angeles, Puerto Rico & Across the U.S.
Anti-Trump protests—
against ICE, deportations, anti-Black violence , Islamophobia, & anti -immigrant policies.
In Puerto Rico🇵🇷resistance also calls out U.S. colonial & systemic violence .
So much harm and pain being inflicted on Black, brown , immigrant,
Queer and Trans communities.
And still—they resist.

📍Gaza, Palestine 🇵🇸
The genocide continues.
Food and aid are blocked.#breaktheseige
Children are starving . Generations of families are being killed , and torn away from their homes and land.

Silence - and not taking a stand is complicity.
Liberation is interconnected.🌍
Check Yourself✊🏾

💔💔💔I feel the immense pain and fear in the communities I serve and deeply respect .

Vogue @voguemagazine

On the downtown D train at 145th Street, a regal-looking Black woman got on wearing the most spectacular vintage black top hat and long black cape. Her look was fire—regal, opulent, straight up out of another era. When she sat down across from me, I couldn’t help it—I said, “You are so beautiful. You belong at the Met Gala!” She smiled.
I naively added that the theme this year had been Black style. Little did I know I was sitting across from a Harlem historian , fashion stylist and vintage clothing collector.

She reached into her bag and pulled out a copy of Vogue to show me the May 2025 cover—her friend, actor Colman Domingo @kingofbingo standing tall against a fire red background , red flowers in one hand and red gloves in another. Then she flipped to a page with a group portrait. I pointed excitedly , “Dapper Dan! @dapperdanharlem , Spike Lee! @officialspikelee Alongside model Darrel Dismond/ @ddismond And… who is that?”
She smiled: “That’s me.”
“Congratulations,” I said, all lit up. “What’s your name?”
“Lana Turner,” @lanaturnerharlem she said.
“Like the movie star Lana Turner?”
“Yes,” she laughed.
I asked if I could show the portrait to my friend sitting a few seats away and she graciously said yes.

You just couldn’t see it—you could feel it. Black dandyism walked onto the train with her, sat beside her, held space. It was alive in the tilt of her hat, the sweep of her cape, majestic and super fly. Like history and style sitting quietly, but powerfully, in motion.
Another moment of synchronicity.

I had to jump off at 125th—no time to ask for a photo, even though I wanted to hold onto that memory.
I stepped off the train with a full heart of Joy.
Even if it was a brief exchange , it’s A New York underground story I will replay in my head .
Stepping off the subway car I glanced back , “Good night Ms. Turner.”

Love to Toñita @tonitasny a beloved icon in the Puerto Rican diaspora referenced in the song NUEVAYoL from @badbunnypr new album DeBl’TiRAR MaS FOToS ,”Un shot de cañita en Casa de Toñita”. Her Carribean Social Club is a Brooklyn institution in South-side Williamsburg , a safe space for community care , culture and resistance for the last 50 years. 🇵🇷

A homage to Puerto Rico and a declaration of love & belonging , Bad Bunny brings attention to the ongoing fight against colonialism and imperialism it’s impact on Puerto Rico , and how these systems seek to erase our Puerto Rican identity, suppress our culture, and deny our right to self-determination as a US colony. #freepuertorico🇵🇷 #freepalestine🇵🇸

📍Seoul, Korea
While traveling in Korea in November 2024 a brief capture of the power of people’s ongoing resistance as they demanded President Yoon’s impeachment, forcing the reversal of his brief martial law declaration . Their ongoing efforts have created an indelible movement, with his impeachment from office.

During this time, Korea also has been mourning the devastating airline tragedy with a seven-day national period of mourning - a reminder of how we should hold the pain of others and honor collective loss.

As the genocide in Palestine escalates under the Israeli government my hope is that, like the Korean people, global resistance and solidarity will continue to rise to end this genocide ,restoring humanity , peace & liberation for the Palestinian people. 🇰🇷🇵🇸 #Resistance #korea #humanrights #seoul #powertothepeople #antiimperialism
