Emma Verhulst ‘Shelf Life’ Currently on view in Pizza Gallery, Antwerpen. “A sense of envy emerges from this fantasy of what the other has (what the subject has not) - an urge, a wish, a compulsion to somehow steal what they seem to possess, the ease with which they appear to occupy their own life (to take away their enjoyment). And all of a sudden, my gaze is returned - she, a distant observer, and I, a thing being looked at, blunt, formal, controlled, perhaps misread.” Excerpt of the exhibition text by Anna Laganovska @samulsu ‘Shelf Life’ refers to the length of time that a commodity may be stored before it degrades, an expiration date but also refers to a domestic life, the architecture of the home. Emma Verhulst (1994°) draws for her work on observations, photographs, and found footage. An initial drawing forms the basis for an intuitive, associative, and accumulative process. “Woyzeck” - 17 oktober om 14u in Pizza Gallery Gent Wat kan een onvoltooid toneelstuk in een schilderij worden? Voor Rein Dufait is Woyzeck van Georg Büchner (1813–1837) het vertrekpunt voor een reeks van vijftien doeken. Tussen het geschreven woord en de geschilderde vorm opent zich een ruimte waarin Büchners werk verder kan denken. Zijn personage leeft onder de druk van krachten die hem te boven gaan. Bij Dufait laat die spanning zich benaderen vanuit het maken zelf: iedere ingreep verandert het geheel, iedere toevoeging opent een mogelijkheid en sluit een andere af. ‘Woyzeck’ laat zich lezen als een vraag naar wat iets overeind houdt — en welke krachten het vervormen. Hoeveel kan een lichaam, een materiaal, een constructie verdragen? Tussen ingrijpen en laten gebeuren ontstaat een vorm die ook anders had kunnen zijn. “Woyzeck” - 17 October 2pm at Pizza Gallery Gent What can an unfinished play become in a painting? For Rein Dufait, Woyzeck by Georg Büchner (1813–1837) is the starting point for a series of fifteen canvases. Between the written word and the painted form, a space opens in which Büchner’s work can continue to think. His protagonist lives under the pressure of forces beyond his control. In Dufait’s work, this tension can be approached through the act of making itself: each intervention changes the whole, each addition opens one possibility and closes another. ‘Woyzeck’ can be read as a question about what holds something upright—and what forces reshape it. How much can a body, a material, a structure withstand? Opening tomorrow: Emma Verhulst ‘Shelf Life’ Pizza Gallery presents ‘Shelf Life’, the second solo presentation by Emma Verhulst at their Antwerp location. ‘Shelf Life’ refers to the length of time that a commodity may be stored before it degrades, an expiration date but also refers to a domestic life, the architecture of the home. Emma Verhulst (1994°) draws for her work on observations, photographs, and found footage. An initial drawing forms the basis for an intuitive, associative, and accumulative process. A narrative, graphic thread underlies the paintings. “Objects are never encountered directly, as autonomous and whole entities. They are constructed through relations to the world outside of them: colour is revealed in the particular way light hits a surface; shape emerges through shifts in perspective, through closeness and distance. Their characteristics do not simply belong to them independently - they emerge in relation to something else (intimacy builds worlds). But in her paintings, objects appear isolated, paired or bound together through composition and order. The use of collage suggests rupture (imposed or self-inflicted). Her world appears fractured, disjointed - as pieces assembled and glued together loosely in time and space, anticipated to fall apart and reorganise in ways that (finally) will feel right (again).” Excerpt of the exhibition text by Anna Laganovska @samulsu The exhibition opens on Friday September 25th from 7 PM onwards, and runs until October 25th 2026. Final weekend of ‘Bla Bla Bla’ by Bert Huyghe at Pizza Gallery, Antwerpen. Bert Huyghe (b. 1989) is a contemporary Belgian painter whose work explores the tension between memory, image, and perception. Drawing from both personal experience and broader cultural references, his paintings often blur the line between figuration and abstraction, inviting viewers into atmospheres that feel at once familiar and elusive. Huyghe is known for his layered technique. Working primarily with oil on canvas he approaches painting as a process of discovery. Each work evolves through successive layers, revealing traces of earlier gestures beneath the surface. This method gives his paintings a temporal quality, as if they hold echoes of their own making. ‘Bla Bla Bla’ is on view until July 5th 2026. The gallery is open each Saturday and Sunday between 2 PM and 6 PM or by appointment.
